Has anyone tried the distributor they used, the DUI Tri-Power? It has a GM HEI-type ignition controller mounted right on the side, a 45,000V coil (for 0.055" plug gaps), and a custom vacuum advance curve all in one package.

Uh, did you see the price tag? $309? You can buy a NOS distributor from Old Car Parts Northwest for $90, a NEW HEI module for about $20, and an E-core coil for another $20-40. $309 seems overpried, and who knows what advance curve you get with NO vacuum advance. DU-I won't buy it.

interesting article, just wonder why they chose an aluminum block with obvious designed in head gasket sealing issues for an all out dyno test,, guessing they got the afternoon off after the engine destructed.
Note: the HP and TQ are at the flywheel with no accessories, the water pump was aux driven.

I'll grant you the electronic vacuum advance is potentially nifty, but other than that this distributor is massively overpriced Chinese dreck, physically not configured well for a Slant-6 (module location) and fraudulently described by its marketer -- the kind of part that tends to get extra-super-happy "reviews" in magazine articles, because magazines exist to put advertisements in front of receptive eyes.

As for the rest of the artlce: I'm still on page 1 and I've already found two basic errors of fact.

I'm curious, is there an alum block head gasket improvement on the OEM block, if budget was almost unlimited, and if so, what?
And reporting a count total only on errors of fact about an article, with little or no explanation, seems like an internet hit and run tactic, and appears only to be self promoting.

Well... Props to Steve for doing all this work on our motors. No magazine (or other news) article I have been involved with has been fully factually accurate. That is (almost always) just the nature of the beast.

Cool article and nice back to back comparisons. That is a lot of work, and yes,too bad about the head gasket...

There is an Alum engine MLS head gasket that is ready for testing, but needs time for me/us to get a motor together. If you want to try one, it is about $300 for a single. A friend and I got together to get this custom made (mostly work by friend). No, it is not Cometic and yes it is totally untested at this point.

I also noticed they did all that work and used a pre-68 head with the non-redesigned combustion chamber. They also did the stock exhaust manifold testing with a single noodle pipe that doesn't even look to be 2 inches in diameter. That is giving away efficiency and power.
