The water pump is gear driven. Sandy probably knows all about these, but it was new to me!

A proposed Mercedes inline six eliminates all drive belts via a crankshaft mounted "starter/generator". Water pump and most accessories are driven by electric motors.

I would have thought you'd run across a Hercules JX-series engine in the woods.

87 hp from 320 ci (5.25 liters) is a bit on the soft side, but there were 110 hp versions too. Studebaker made a smaller intake manifold which reduced the power, but gave longer engine life.

Studebaker trucks were a rare import here,

We see lots of Power Wagons however.

Yep, Studebaker US6 trucks were far more rare than the GMC 6x6. The Russians got a lot of Studebaker US6 trucks through lend-lease. Hercules JX engines were used in all kinds of things other than Studebaker war wagons; Dodge weapons carriers, White trucks and GE search light generators. An engine I'd like to own would be a Hall-Scott. Much more advanced being OHC, hemi-head.

Many engines that used crank mounted/driven superchargers, were centrifical, and used a planetary gear overdrive.

The original Dodge four cylinder used a starter/generator and some '50s Mopars used a generator with a shaft to drive the power steering.

Manufacturers are again trying to integrate shared drive systems in the name of efficiency and packaging.
