Rob and Dennis mentioned when they started racing slant sixes. Who is the oldest (not age) slant six racer on the site, or racing the series. I started in 1974. Gary Brunner somewhere around there, also. Don't know about Seymour.

I thought of that too. Great idea for a thread.

I started racing (ahem, on the street) my 68 Slant 6 Dart in 1989, but did not make it to an official dragstrip until 1995 when I moved to LA, somewhere around September or October of '95. I started modifying my Dart about 1 week after I got it in 1988. I rebuilt/modified my first engine in winter of 1989. That shortblock is still in the car. I don't think I raced against another Slant 6 car until I moved to NC in 2002 and went to Slant 6 races in the series. I did go to the 1998 Mopar Nats (driving from LA in 64 Dart and back) and raced other Mopars.

OK, that was a long winded answer...

Lou

I raced my '72 Dart at the Friday Night Drags in Phoenix starting around 1991. I didn't race against another Slant 6 vehicle until Chase and I towed GodsRods Duster I to Bristol in 2002. The Dart was a 318 car by then and still is...

Well, I started racing in 1980, but that was with Big Blocks (65 Sport Fury). I have been horsing around with my own slants since around 2000, but have not officially made a pass yet in a slant powered rocket.

I'll add to my post. I started with slants in 1974, running Y/SA in Div#1. with a 65 Valiant model 200 4dr sdn with a 170 slant. The following year the car fit in Z/SA, but we swapped the drive train into a model 200 2 dr sdn, and then a model 100 2 dr sdn. Still in Z/SA. First race against another slant was a Gold Cup series race at Englishtown, NJ. The final round was my 170 powered 65 Valiant against Ray Valpreada's 67 ply wagon with a 225, in Y/SA. Started running brackets around the same time. After I couldn't run stock eliminator any longer, started hopping up the 170 slant, and just bracket racing. The car/engine evolved to being turbocharged, with a Corvair turbo, in 1979. Ran with and without turbo, until 1985, when I quit racing. Didn't race again, until Seymour got a hold of me in 2000, and told me about the slant six series. I took the drive train from my Valiant, and put it in my 66 Cuda (was 360 powered), and run my first race at Rockingham in 2001. I have run at least one slant six race every year since. I still have my original 65 Valiant 2dr sdn, and turbo setup. I hope to have it out again for Clay City.

Hey Lou, mine was longer.

My first slant 6 race car was in the fall of 1962, a 1961 V100 2 dr. with a Hyper Pak 170. I have been racing on and off ever since, I always have owned at least one slant 6 since I got my drivers license. There was a picture of Charlie's Z/SA car in the National Dragster back in 1974 or 75 and I remembered his name when Doug and I started the Racing News. I was accumulating parts to build a Z/SA of my own but they changed the rules to allow only 4 cylinders in the bottom class. Racing slant 6s was quite popular in the late 60s and early 70s but most serious competitors lost interest when the 292 Chevy and 300 Ford sixes became more developed. Still a fun thing to play with though!

I had a Slant in my Dart for awhile in the early 80s. I ran it a couple times and put the small block back in. I officially started racing with the Slant racers in 98 or 99.

I made my first drag strip passes in the same Valiant I own and race now. 1977 would be the year. But I took a small break from 1977 to 2010!! :D :D

Charlie,
I expected yours to be longer in the first place, so thanks for restoring my faith in you!

Great stories, everyone. Keep 'em coming!

I should say that my parents had a gold 72 Demon with a Slant from the year I was born, so my Mom and Dad (no lightfoots) used to burn us around in that until I was 10. Then the 68 Dart 270 4dr sedan rolled in the driveway in 1982 when my great aunt died and my Mom inherited it. I still remember walking around the car and saying WOOOOW, on the first day it arrived. I was 10. I still race that car. I tell people it as 3X the HP than original and gets 30% better MPG...

Lou

I started and finished the restoration of my 1966 Dart 270 slant six (my high school car), in the the winter of 1994-1995. I then decided to go the Mopar Southern Classic in Bristol in July 1995 as a spectator. There I was surprised to find a whole class of slant six racers. I was introduced to many of the guys and was immediately hooked. I had never made a pass down a drag strip but decided then and there I wanted to join in. I went home and started making some changes to my car to make it more competitive as a double duty street car and racer. The first race I remember attending was again the Mopar Southern Classic in 1996. There were a lot to cars there as this race was the best attended event for Slant six at the time. I remember Rodney and Jerry Hargus, John and Jim Cox, Charles Myers, Gary and Meril Bruner, Mark Goodman, and many others. What an event! After that its all history. I wouldn't take anything for the experience, and all the friends I have had the pleasure to meet and race with over the years!

1972. I had my first car, 62 Valiant with a 61 Lancer front end and trunk lid. I had bought this car from Charles Shank, my mentor. It had a loose 225 from his roundy round car. Lots of street races, it would bury the speedo at 110 in second gear.

Then a 65 Valiant 100, took all the 62 Valiant parts. But I added the Hyper Pak. I ran a 65 Chevy pick-up with a 250 six. 2 fours, headers, 4 speed. We went at a 10 roll and you know that 3 speed Valiant was a dog at 10 mph. I beat him by a car length, he never stopped.

A couple more and then the 64 Barracuda. 225 with Hyper Pak intake and exhaust manifolds. 500 comp Holley 2 BBL, 4 speed, 3.55 sure grip, 14 x 6 Firestone Cheater Slicks. Ran 15 flat at 89/90 MPH at Richmond Dragway in 1975. That car led to the 67 Barracuda that went 13.48 at 99 MPH. It was featured in High Performance Mopar in 1989.

Kinda of funny story when the 64 was a street car. I came up on another 65 Barracuda, both blue, at a stop light. That was the first time I met a good friend Tommy Corbett and in the pass seat was another friend I knew, Randy Jones. We agreed to go at it when the light changed. Just before the light changed, Randy asked me what I had in the Barracuda, I said a slant, just as the light changed he yelled, "Bull $#!+" and off we went. I was dead on him till 4th and he put a car length on me. We stopped at the next burger joint and showed our cards. They could not believe I was telling the truth. Tommy had a warm 318 with 340 heads and an LD340. Life long friends now, he runs a Super Gas Daytona with a 340.

I spoke with Frank Fremlin the other day, "all slanters are good folks" I agree with Ron from above, I have been honored to meet and know so many good, scratch that, great slant six people. Thanks for the good times.
