There should be an axle in that box that fits the Challenger... and the Chevy wheels on it...

Howard has called a couple times... He's about to pull his offer to help if I don't get my act together and get up there to see him...

I spent Saturday afternoon with Howard, Jason and Evan at Ohio Valley watching them race the Dart Sport and Evan's Jr. Dragster.

The Hillside Six was running 7.10 with some traction issues. Then in the first round of eliminations Jason really heated the tires up. Better traction, but then he had to lift trying to win the round. He ran a 7.08 on a 7.00 dial.

Sunday I took my engine up to Howard's and we spent the day taking it apart and visiting. I'm glad we tore it down. It needed it and there are some things that need to be addressed. Howard kicked me out about 4:00 PM and kept my engine! (No Dennis, not so he could throw it away...  ) He was mumbling something about a bigger cam, more compression and WAY more RPM... It was really nice to hang out with him again and it's super cool of him to help me make sure my engine is good to go. While he has th engine I'll focus on getting the rest of the car ready.

Before Rick cuts off my shirt tails... The photos were taken and uploaded in the upright position. It's something with the board software that rotates them. Not my fault! :P

Howard doesn't mess around. He called me last night with an "update"!

Upgrades:

Better Cloyes Double Roller timing set. He threw away the cheapie one that was in there.
Bigger push rods. The stockers that were in there had to go. I gave him the 3/8" Smith Brothers rods out of the first Challenger motor, but if they aren't the right length we will get another set.
Hone the block for better wall clearance. Most of the pistons were really tight and would have likely caused issues as soon as it really heated up.
Polish the crank. There was dirt in the engine that caused the rod bearings to not look so great after just the initial break in. :?
Thoroughly clean the block and crank.
Several little tricks Howard does to the block to help with head gasket sealing, etc.

I need to run some more parts up there that I forgot to take with me Sunday. (External oil pump, motor plate, headers, DusterIdiot Dizzy, gaskets...)

It's good to have a mentor to kick me in the behind a little. :D

It looks like I need to quit fiddling with the Duster and get busy on the Challenger. (Hmmm,... I think I've been told that before... More than once... By multiple people... )

How are your 3/8" pushrods going to be any bigger than my 3/8" pushrods you drooling fool?

Howard called me again last night telling me I'd better get off my keester and send him a new set of rings, cuz he's all done and wants my engine outta his way!

The block has been honed to better fit the 3.504 pistons and decked .080 to get the compression up to 13.4:1. Actual calculations had the compression at only about 10.8:1 before. The pistons are now .096 above the deck!
Honing the block to the correct size caused the ring gap to expand a little more than Howard would like, so I need to get new rings.
Howard blocks off all but the two rear water ports between the block and head. He also uses stand pipes in the two rear ports. Doing that helps with sealing the copper head gasket. The engine will be run on alcohol, which helps with cooling as well.

The crank has been polished and the bearings have been cleaned up with Scotch-Brite.

Howard also cleaned and prepared the intake and Flying Toilet. He will be replacing the 6 injection lines as well. He wants to use angled fittings in order to have shorter lines instead of the "spaghetti" that's on there now.

I'm also looking for a used double roller timing set or just the chain. Howard put one of the Aussie sets from his parts stash on there to replace the cheapie stock set, but the chain is too tight. I'll post a wanted ad.

Have I mentioned how much I appreciate Howard taking the time and helping me with this?

More later. :D

Very cool. Lucky man you are to have Howard crankin' on your motor. Can't wait to see/hear it run!

I have a used timing set I got from Howard. I'll be at the shop Thursday if you need it.

If you could take a look while you’re there I’d appreciate it.

I got the rings ordered and sent to Howard. :D

I found a used Factory type double roller timing chain. I will bring it along to MotorMile. I think I took it out of one of our cars when we did a cam change and it had a little more slop than I liked. May be just right for what you need.
