Please make some measurements before you replace a thing. Please.

Thank you,

I would say try to shift at 6200 and trap 62-6600

A call to the calvert racing folks would do wonders here along with reading the how to hook and launch book.

Does it have Super Stock springs with the CalTracs? That is a big no-no according to Calvert. Also, how high are you letting off the brake?

Getting it on 4 corner scales will help a lot too.

Wow, I missed a lot of posts. Thanks for all the replies. I will try to respond here briefly.

I am coming off the trans brake at 3600 rpm
The car has calvert split mono leaf springs and Seymour put a lighter rear 1/2 of the spring on to lower the car slightly. So the springs should be softer than the original calvert split mono. I still have the original back 1/2 of the spring if needed in the future.

I will try to get it on the 4 corner scales again with me in it and see what we have. Only weight change i've done since seymour had the car is to use a slightly lighter 16v battery.....and I weigh slightly more than him. I will weigh it here when I get a chance. According to Seymours numbers it should be right around 2170 with me in it right now.

Lou, I agree and don't plan to swap or order anything without first getting the measurements of everything (and car weight) and doing some reading. I have heard that it is best to have the shocks straight up and down and that means I would need to make new mounts and weld in more supports if I was to make that work too.

Greg, I have the hook and launch book you mention and the link to the calvert contact info you gave me. I was thinking the videos would be beneficial for them to see as well.

Matt, I am not at all familiar with Caltracs either so I think Gregs advice is good. I really need to learn the caltrac basics.

Mark, I hadn't considered the weight savings of running the shocks without oil.
I do plan to buy shocks as one of the first things but I haven't measured anything yet and don't even know what shock brands to consider. I don't want to spend a fortune on shocks but I certainly want good adjustments for compression and rebound both. Any suggestions on shock manufacturers?

As far as RPM's go I always have had a love for high revving engines. With that being said I'd much rather have an engine that is running long term. I currently shift at 6200 and have the limiter set at 6500 which seems plenty conservative to me. I plan to run this way for a while just to make sure the engine is safe. It pulls so strong up to 6200 and I feel like there is more on up but I think it is more important to dial in the suspension first. No sense in adding RPM to a car that wants to bounce off the track as it is.

Rob, I will try to get my signature updated with some current Valiant info soon.

Dennis, Howard shifting at 9000 RPM was that a mistype?

Thanks for all the help and ideas. I will update with weights and measurements as soon as I can. If anyone has any double adjustable shock brand recommendations i'd really appreciate that too.

Howard swears they turn their motor 9000. The general consensus of the Slanted collective was disbelief. I know he uses aluminum rods and some other high dollar stuff, so I can neither confirm nor deny.

The rear section of the spring should be irrelevant, it is just along for the ride anyway. Porposing could mean your spring rates on front and back are too close together. Your rears may be too light. Your front shocks may be dead too. Front is just as important as the back.

I believe Calvert recommends Ranchos. Top of the line would be Santhuff's, but they are incredibly salty.

Is your link in the top or bottom hole on the front bracket? Top hole makes it more violent.

Calvert's has really good customer service. Not sure if Travis is still there, but he was incredibly sharp.

I just watched the videos of the car. It is not trying to rotate at all. You may need to move/add some weight at the back too.

I didn't catch this the first time around....

The original builder of your car may have drained the shocks to remove some weight, so you might need some new shocks.

I thought I had heard everything.
I cut the dust shields off to save a half pound, but draining oil?
oof!

Anyway, looks like a coil over front suspension, so you may not have a lot of shock options there.

Coilover may never work with CalTracs.

The idea of adding rear weight sounds good and doesn't cost anything, just don't tell Seymour.
Draining the shocks was a joke for Seymour, but I bet those shocks on the car were the lightest weight available.

Dennis since you know wiring, make sure Howard has his tach wired correctly.

I've watched the Hillside Six make a few passes recently... I wasn't IN the car, so I can neither confirm nor deny the 9000 RPM claims. I'm still hoping to convince them to be at Clay City this year so y'all can corner him yerselves...

Why is that? Is it due to the amount of extension /lift they have or don't have?
