I have a '67 dart 270. The wiper switch is either messed up or the wrong one (many components on this car were replaced, not sure if it is the original switch, looks to have been swapped out previously). How do I know if my wipers are supposed to have a 2 speed or 3 speed setup? The switch on there now appears to have two speeds, but it doesn't return to the right spot. Does that mean it's the wrong switch or that it is bad? How do I determine what setup I have, part numbers on the wiper motor arms?

Well, the park problem could likely be a faulty ground. Make absolutely certain that the switch and the wiper motor are solidly grounded.

I would confirm what Matt said, first.

The two styles of mopar wiper motors are pretty easy to spot... the 2 speed motor, extends from the firewall and is about the size of a beer can
(the late ones are typically painted black). The Variable speed motor is flat and the motor is at a 90 degree angle off the transmission housing.

Looks like I have the 3-speed variable type wiper motor, and the switch is a rheostat type variable speed switch. So, it could be the ground is insufficient. Don't these ground on the chassis, i.e. the body of the switch when attached to the dash makes the ground? I haven't pulled it yet to see if there is a separate ground wire. Will do though.

Normally a ground wire runs from the engine block over to the firewall (near the heater area of the firewall).
Perking that up by cleaning the connections and the firewall contact area might be a starting point.

I checked several Dart wiring diagrams with 66 being the closest to your car......in each case they show a ground wire coming from the multi-speed wiper motor that is #57 and is white.
They did not show a ground coming off the switch itself. If you have a shop manual for a 67 it would be helpful to know what the factory planned for your year.
Your mission might be to determine if the plan was followed & in good shape?

Thanks, i'll do some testing/digging on info for my model. It looks like my car came with a factory rear window defogger as well but it was removed at some point.

OK, so I finally got up under the dash and it turns out there is a dark green wire (circuit V5) that goes nowhere. The wiring diagram says this goes to the variable speed wiper motor, but I can't find anyplace for it to go. The harness coming off the wiper motor has three wires (no green one). I assume this dark green is a ground, considering what you'all have suggested.

Go for the gold with this wiring diagram:

Follow the lines from the wiper motor to the wiper switch terminals. It takes 3 diagrams to see how the brown, dark green, dark blue and red lines go thru the bulkhead connector a, b, c, d terminals and convert to v3, v4, v5, v6 in the instrument panel diagram and then the next diagram shows the terminals those lines hook to at the wiper switch.

The wiper switch also has 3 other wires hooking up.

Check for all wires being hooked to the proper terminals and that they have continuity from one end to the other end.....ie the bulkhead connector is connecting.

After you have confirmed the above you can move onto discovering where the voltage comes in and if the switch is sending it to the proper terminal of the switch.

Such fun!!!

yes, I have the '67 wiring diagram. it shows all the wires between the motor and the switch. The only thing is, it shows a green wire (V5) to the motor, but there is no green wire in the motor's harness. There is a green wire from a pigtail on the switch, but it goes nowhere. All other wires match color and destination. It appears from looking online that this motor came with and without the green wire. I'm asking if anyone knows the difference between the two configurations of motors.

According to this article 67 had both 2 speed or 3 speed wiper motors for Darts.

The '67 parts manual doesn't show that number for dart (or any '67 dodge for that matter) it has different numbers.

The '67 FSM shows 2 speed, 3 speed and variable speed part numbers.

Can you get a "good to use" 2 speed wiper motor for a test and hook it up to see if it works OK with the present wiring? If it worked, even without a special grounding effort, it would confirm that the wiring/switch you have is good to go at least with a 2 speed?
Then the issue would come down to how to hook up a different kind of motor to your wiring set. Otherwise it would be questionable wiper motor. Ruling out possibilities is one approach to a modified system diagnosis?

The hanging dark green wire suggests it's disconnected at the bulkhead connector? I have seen a wire do that...... that had evidence of a current overload.
