I am going to put an Edelbrock SP2P intake manifold on my 82 Ramcharger. It is a 318, but the same stock carbs were used on Super Six equipped slants. I am also planning some other modifications to the motor that might require some tuning to the carb to make it run properly again. Since the slant used the same two barrel carbs as the 318, I figured you all might be able to tell me which stock two barrel carb is more tuning friendly- the Holley 2280 or the Carter BBD. At this point I am leaning towards the BBD since I know I can use Edelbrock jets in it. I don't think the Holley 2280 uses normal Holley jets. The BBD is also more adjustable with the metering rod adjustment rather than the 2280 vacuum operated power valve.

Am I totally off base? Any input appreciated.

P.S. the 318 will be a low RPM torque emphasized motor so I am not contemplating any four barrel swap at this point.

Edelbrock step up piston springs fit the bbd and bbs carbs. With the sp2p delayed power enrichment might make better mpg. Shorter lighter spring or for more torque early longer stiffer spring. The original carter spring kit had one more spring than edelbrock a 10 pound spring. Edelbrock stops at 8 pounds. That spring can be stretched if needed.

Thanks! Looks like I will be digging through my carbs pile to find a good BBD.

There are two different metering rod lifter arms used in the bbd. The difference was at just off idle to mid range throttle opening. As throttle passed half way point almost the same. Before full throttle they were the same. This was sort of a half moon tapered effect. This was a piston stop to limit upward travel of step up piston being pushed up by the step up spring. In other words enrichment was limited by throttle position. The green one used in most slants, but not all, restricted upward travel of piston much more than the black ones used in most v8s but not all. These can be changed. For example some slant wagons used v8 metering rod arm and stiffer step up spring for the 1979 model year. From reading tsbs my guess was this was done for nox emissions. Rich mixtures burn cooler thus less nox also less mpg. At rebuild some would replace v8 arm with the green one same as sedan models and 1978 wagons. Some 318s used the green slant six metering arm.

Wow, this is great info! Where are you getting it? Is there a tuning manual fir the BBD?

No tuning manual for BBD, but there are training and theory of operation manuals plus old TSB,s viewtopic.php?t=55801

Oh, yeah! I forgot the interchange info was in there, too. It has been a while since I tinkered with carbs.

I would use an adapter and an Autolite 2100 carb from a 304 AMC v8. Much better carb then either the Holley or Carter and you can actually get tuning parts for them.

I will keep that in mind. Short term, I already have the BBD. I think i can pick up an Edelbrock tuning kit for about $50 on eBay with jets and springs and metering rods. I will try that first but if I need to get crazy I will think about changing to a different two barrel carb.

Edelbrock jets and springs fit the BBD ,metering rods do not. Do not buy any thing just yet. On the sp2p v8 or slant carb, just bolt on and go. Real carb tuning starts with wide band. 35 years ago had a couple sp2p in taxi service worked out real well. The sp2p has small runners, thus high port velocity, thus good vaporization. Small plenum also helps with more even fuel distribution and better vaporization.

Wow, thanks again! Tons of good info. I was planning on starting with the carb in stock condition, I just wanted the ability to tune it if the SP2P changed the vacuum signal too much. A wide band is part of the plan.

I am running a BBD from who know where as the truck was a escapee from a bone yard. There is a adjustment under the cover to put the metering rods in the jets for proper fuel . Too far up and you will get back on your quarter panel. Then adjust the step up in the piston for travel on load just like a power valve would do. It took a while to get mine right but that is all I have done in 7 years with it beside the occasional retorgue of the base plat to bowl screws. Gas mileage in the low 20s over 4 years of driving.

Why are you wanting to run a 2bbl on a 4bbl intake? Is the SP2P a spread bore? I had one once and sold it to Tony Defeo.

A Mopar specific Q-jet is a wonderful thing.
