Oil pump gear on the cam and the pump had lots of wear. It would have made it through this season but not next for sure. So if I want to run this engine as is with this cam I will need to install the external pump. Not sure I have enough time to rework everything I need to change in 4 weeks. I may just drop in my back up motor.

Thanks for the rundown, Rick. So, how did it not have oil pressure if the pump was still turning/geared? I think I would run those bearings if the pics are making sense to me. What cam and pump did you have in there?

Lou

The pick up threads broke off at the block. ( picture on previous page)

Cam was a regrind and the oil pump was a Dutra pump with the spray tube spraying right on the gears.

Hey Rick, can you post photos of the oil pump gear-cam with the excessive wear?
Maybe in a separate post so it does not clog up your Valient post.
Can you speculate on the cause of the wear...I believe you said it was on a Dutra ported pump, was
it one of Doc’s hardened gears ?

Yep, will do. It was one of Doc's hardened gears also.

Since I am going to install the external pump on the race engine I decided not to try and rush things with only a month till Clay City. The back up motor that runs 14.8-15.0 was on the stand for just a time like this. The only thing I had to do to drop it in was install the flexplate and lock ring on the bolts. It is now sitting in the engine bay waiting to be accessorized! :D :D

I have a lot to do to make the external pump work like I want it to and I didn't want to "not" enjoy the time working on the project. I need to modify the existing deep pan for an external AN connection and new pick up in the pan. No more pick up tubes for me. Then I need to locate the oil pump down low on the D/S which is where the alternator currently is. So I need to make a bracket to hold the oil pump ad the alternator right above it. Plus my Webers will be installed over the winter too, so the alternator has to be just in the right spot not to interfere with the front Clifford long tubes. Then modify the back 2 tubes to not hit the intake. Then I need to mount my remote oil filter, make up the hoses, and then test everything. So there is a lot to do. This way I have the engine on the stand and can build it as I get the time and feel like it.

I did start a new thread on the oil pump gear and how it looked over here.

In a couple hours this old engine should be running again!! :D :D

It is nice to have a backup engine just for circumstances like this. I have one but have been fortunate not to need it in the last few years.

The thing I hate most about engine swaps, in and out is the convertor bolts! I really don't like them. All my other bolts can be run in almost the whole way by hand and are easier for me to access. Hope to have it running Tuesday evening for sure. Good to hear yours run Dennis!

Engine in and ready to fire last night. One small problem...... No oil at my house!! :D :D What kind of a yahoo has all these vehicles and kids vehicles and doesn't have 5 qts of 10W30? That would be me. I'll have it delivered to the shop in the morning. Fire it up tomorrow, change the plugs and I should be ready to race!!!
