stopped by the shop to check progress on the 68 Barracuda,
every time I see the car, there is less of it,,,,

the right rear frame rail had rusted through, I knew that one needed to be changed out.
the left side had not rusted through, but so much metal had flaked off on the inside, it was noticeable thinner
then the new right side frame rail,, now is the to fix that, so a new left side rail is on order.
The front rails required some touch up where the front inner fenders attach, but were good enough to keep.

The plan is for me to get the car back in eary Feburary, that gives me F-M-A to put it back together,

The first MD race in May would be a stretch, but I plan to be running the races June and after.

Wow, I would not have guessed there was that much rust underneath on that car. Looks like they are being thorough!

that is the plan,

Quote:
that much rust underneath

there was rust perforation on the:
driver side floor pan,
the driver side rear floor pan,
the very bottom of the spare tire well
the top of the passenger side front inner fender
and the right rear frame rail

there are aftermarket patches available for all of those and my initial intent was to have patches installed as I did not want
to loose a year having the car redone. The shop I ended up going with is typically booked over a year in advance, however
they had a window open up that fit my time frame perfectly, Dec of 18 to Jan of 19.

I looked at pricing betwen doing the patches and simply replacing all with new, there was a difference in cost, but not like it was double.
The shop is using all AMD panels, so that also added to the price. The torsion bar mount, firewall, radiator support, all cross bracing was still good, so
I am just replacing sheet metal.

I like the 'survivor' look of the exterior. It may have more of a 'day two survivor look' when I am completely done.

The 68 B went into the shop Christmas Eve , got it back today, 60 days later,,

What was not done can hold off till next winter, for now the plan is to get it back
together and back on the strip. June is the goal.

Two months worth of effort, (I know that the month of May is already committed to),
lets see where that gets us.

it would take a lot of home runs for that happen,
get the car back together, new motor tuned - strip ready, and robust enough to then drive from Indy to nearly the Atlantic ocean in three months,,,
but I am swinging.

my realistic goal is to be running at Wilksboro the following month.

Turned my new welding skill loose on the K frame.
I had the K frame professionally cleaned / baked and blasted at a local parts cleaning location.
They have a chemical tank big enough to set an entire car frame into.
As I was interested in getting the grease and oil out of the metal they recommended an oven
bake then a grit blast, so that is what was done. The K frame was clean-clean-clean when I picked it up.

I purchased a K frame reinforcement kit from Firm Feel. The kit has cut pieces that reinforce the
K frame at the: strut rod openings, lower control arm pins and boxes in the steering box mount and adds
a support to the front side of the driver side engine mount. My K frame already had reinforcement at the
strut rod openings so I did not use those two pieces.
If a person has access to a band saw and about a 12x12 piece of sheet stock, make your own.
With the exception of the strut rod and lower control arm disks, every thing requires a lot of shaping,
grinding, fitting,,, but once they are sized and bent to fit, and welded, everything does get tied together.

The perimeter of the K frame was spot welded from the factory. I went around the edges and seam welded it.
If the weather holds I should get it painted later this week.

Looks like nice work. I may do a little gusseting and seam welding on the 64 Dart frame and K-frame while I have the engine out this time.

working on the car every day,, sometimes twice,,,

a lot to do, the intent is to make it the car I want,
and that is:
a car I can drive to the Slant Six Series drag races, a couple hundred
miles or more. Think a Drag Week Car, but not that intense.

So my car will need a sound system, installed dash speakers today.
Cut the OE dash speaker out of its frame and installed a set of 3.5 inch JBL speakers.
Used two layer plywood platforms as the speaker mount, chose that for torsional strength.
with directional flexability,,, will add door mounted speakers, a decent receiver-amp,,,

we shall see, its only a car,,, that I intend to drive in for X hours at a time, so the tunes need
to sound right.

Nice John,

You wont need those speakers - they make the car heavier and you should be listening to the sweet sounds of slant snarl - It will play in any key you want!
