After investigating a transmission fluid leak at our last Lemons race, it seems that the rear cooler line is loose where the NPT fitting screws into the (1964 A904) case. I'm pretty sure the threads in the aluminum case are stripped out. I'm thinking of drilling out and re-tapping the case, maybe installing a threaded insert, but I'm curious what I might run into if I drill this hole slightly oversize. Has anyone ever done a repair like this?

Also, is the rear fitting on the A904 the supply or return?

I put threaded inserts in both (inlet & outlet) of the original transmission on my '64 Dart (904) and never had an issue until I went to remove the lines while replacing the transmission. One insert spun and came off with the line(but never leaked?), the other was seized and I twisted the line trying to remove it! Easy work when the trans. is out of the car, maybe not so much installed?

See if A and A transmission tech line might be of some help on that one.

On further disassembly, it looks like the threads are actually fine. The 45° adapter fitting (1/8" NPT to 5/16" flare) just wasn't screwed in far enough. Rather than worry about getting proper alignment on the 45° adapter fitting after tightening it into the case, I removed it and installed a shortened hose barb into the case with loctite. I then cut back the steel cooler line and ran a short length of heavy duty fuel line between them. There was just enough room after shortening the hose barb to prevent the hose from hitting the trans tunnel where it bends downward. I figure the soft line should reduce stress and vibration on the NPT threads, and it's far enough away from the exhaust for heat not to be an issue.

Sounds like a good solution, except you cannot use fuel line. Trans fluid will eat it up and you will have a big leak from that hose. You need trans fluid specific hose for sure. Glad the threads were fine - whew! Luckily we didn't leak enough fluid at Barber to bother anyone...

Yep, go to the parts store and get some trans line specific rubber hose.

Interesting. I didn't realize ATF was that chemically aggressive.

Well, while I assumed it was fuel line I'm now thinking about it more and realize that what I used was actually a leftover scrap from the hose we originally bought for the forward transmission cooler lines on this car. There are no markings visible on it, but it's a thick-walled, dual-layer hose with a red exterior. The Dart had an aftermarket A/C system when we first built it into a Lemons car. We cut the stock hard cooler lines short and used this hose to bridge the distance to the A/C condenser. I think we ran that thing as a transmission cooler for a couple years, so this hose should be fine until the transmission comes out of the car and I can implement a more permanent solution.

FYI, I believe the rear line is the return line.

That's good to know; should be lower pressure than supply. I couldn't find the info in a quick search of the FSM.
