If you are just looking for freeway friendly driving, just forget all the expensive stuff and buy a complete parts truck or all the parts to do a factory 833 overdrive that came in thousands of trucks. Then at least all the parts are a bolt in for you. Probably less than $1000 if you are patient.

Are you talking putting the long 833OD into the A body, or just swapping into the truck?

The truck a833 od will fit b and e bodies for those that don't know.

Are the gear ratios the same?

As far as I know, all a833 od's have the same ratios.

Per a really good article from Allpar, this is correct with an insignificant correction. The first three gears are the same in all OD trannys (3.09, 1.67, 1.00). Pre-74 versions have a 0.73 OD, 75 and newer are 0.71. Not enough of a difference to amount to anything.

OK, Thanks. I have a 833 OD in my truck that is very noisy, and could use syncros. I have a couple of 833 OD's of unknown condition, from unknown vehicles, on the shelf. So I have a chance of mixing/matching some parts.

There are no A-833OD units before the 1975 Model year...up to that point you are stuck with a 3 speed, the NP, and the Truck A-822 (uncle cousin brother to the 833 non-OD box).
OD boxes were advertised as .73 for car, and .71 for trucks... the change is in the pitch and tooth count of the gearsets... so if swapping guts (i.e. counter shaft and mainshaft gears),
make sure to count the teeth, or you will be in for a fun surprise when you go to assemble it.

Good Luck.

I think you'll find there is a miniscule difference in the indirect ratios of the A833 OD in A-body length with the 26-spline output shaft. In other words, the ones made for the slant 6 in cars.

Apparently, and this is something I was told a long time ago, they were built with finer teeth in the gears and are quieter.

There is an article out there somewhere on how to swap a B/E-body 4 speed into an A body. I lost it many years ago. Probably out there somewhere.

4 speed article on this board helps...

There will be no dicernable issue in performance as the ratios are pretty much the same...but as I stated the pitch of the gears are different between the boxes, so watch swapping guts and
swapping stuff, you have to watch...

FYI, the 1975 Iron case and 1976 Alum case A-833OD in A-bodies use the 30/31 spline A-727 driveline yoke (this is true for a majority of the Truck units as well), and sometime during the later-70's run some F-body units used a 26 spline 3-speed/A-904 style driveline yoke (these also have aluminum bodies)...
