If look close in that picture,there is return spring on tranny kick down throttle rod. Is it there? Spring should hold rod against carb throttle full time. Rod and carb arm should move together full time no gap. That slot is fail safe only. If kick down rod gets stuck slot allows carb to return to curb idle.

Funny you should mention that, but no. There isn't one currently on the car, nor has there ever been, and there wasn't even one on the parts aspen I bought. This would probably explain the funky kickdown behavior that seems to happen at random.

In this picture spring removed, carb has returned safely to curb idle, trans rod still at half throttle position. If trans rod were to get stuck for some reason,bind up, snow ice, internal failure etc, slot allows carb to return to curb idle. Fail safe.
