Hey guys I want to know what you guys would do for performance if you were in my shoes.

I have a 73 dart sport with 90,000 miles on it,with a o.d 4 speed.

I might be buying a clifford 4 bbl manifold and a comp 260H cam from a member and was wondering what kind of carb should I use,and what kind of head work? Its for a daily driver and I dont mind using 91 octane fuel, but would like to use 87 if I can!

Also I am thinking a set of 6 into one with a 2 1/4 pipe,or the dual 3 into one headers with dual 2 in. pipe.

Let the ideas flow

Your '73 has solid lifters. The 260H (hydraulic) will not work without extra modification.

"Increased performance" covers a huge field. Rather than starting at the end (buying parts), you'll get better results if you start at the start (deciding on some concrete goals). What do you want to do with the car? Drive around town, mostly? Drive on the highway, mostly? Drag race?

What does "increased performance" mean to you, specifically? What does the car do now that you don't want it to do when you're done modifying it? What does the car not do now that you want it to do? How much quicker is enough? How much fuel consumption is too much?

A 4bbl and headers + overdrive trans with streetable rear axle ratio is a good recipe for not enough smiles per gallon...

I would like to see 15 m.p.g or better, especially if I have to use premium. I want to drive it around town mostly and ocasionally on the highway(but not more than 10 mi. one way) I have a 8 3/4 rear with a 3.23 gear. Right now the car is a regular stock slant with a auto tranny,slow.....boring.I would love for it to be in the 15 sec. 1/4 mi. range

" A 4bbl and headers + overdrive trans with streetable rear axle ratio is a good recipe for not enough smiles per gallon..."

To me that combo sounds like plenty enought smiles per gallon, especiall when you factor in a cam and head work! Cause If I stay out of it in town I should see good m.p.g and still have fun with it when I hammer it!

My last slant car was stock with only a super six/ported exa. manifold, and it had some pep if you really got into it,and it was a 4 door auto dart! :D

I race big block/hemi cars,so Im not fooling myself with great power expectations from the slant.Ive always had a soft spot for the buzzin half dozen, and just want a good street recipe for some fun and economy since my current daily is a '69 HEMI Charger 4 speed with 3.91's out back,it drinks premium at the rate of 7 gallons per mile it seems like......

OK, if you're looking for a minimum of 15mpg in mostly around-town driving, then your "4bbl, headers and big cam" idea is definitely not going to work well for you. It's too much carburetor. It's too much exhaust.

That is excellent. If you didn't swap that in yourself, somebody in the car's past did you a favour by swapping it in for you.

H'mm. 15mpg around town, 15-second quarter miles...want fries with that?

Well, then, by all means, go ahead and build it up, try it out and see. After all, it's your car.

Um...huh?

You asked for opinions. I gave mine, and observed that you get to do whatever you want with your car.

Let's not always assume the worst of intentions, there, ace.

With the right jetting and power valve a 390 Holley will get great mileage. I got 16/21 out of one on my Duster with a 3.55 gear and an automatic. Hell, I got 14/17 with 3.91's and a 3000 stall.

Contrary to what Dan is telling you, a 264 is not a big cam. Big would be a .557 like I have in mine. Anything under .500" lift is stock.

...hey, dart4life, didn't you and I go back and forth about something a lil' while back, and you pulled a "I'm a poor, unfortunate, broke-assed kid who doesn't know any better"??? :?

What, did you hit the lottery all of a sudden?

(Pardon me if I am confusing you with someone else :!: )

A matched cam, carb and exhaust system is the key to a good performance.
For the street use, a small carb and low overlap cam has the most influance. For the track, low gearing and free flowing exhaust are important.
Coming up with a good balance of these 4 items can get you to your 15-15 goal with the quarter mile time being the bigger challenge.
How much does the car weigh?
