Good deal! I ran my '79 D100 long bed across the scale at work today and it read 3880 lbs with me on board. My truck has the A833OD and and 8.25.

Gave the truck an oil change and went back to 10/30 oil. I forgot that the truck takes over 6 quarts of oil to fill her up.

Set the timing back from 12 BTDC and 32 total to 10 BTDC and 30 total. It ran great but had a slight ping at WOT. I hope that eliminates it. If not I'll go to 8 BTDC.

I pulled a couple plugs and they looked just like this. Just a light brown. Hard to see on the picture but the insulator is the same color as the tip. This is not to light is it? Sorry, no A/F gauge yet. This is after @ 800 miles of driving with numerous wide open blasts.

Honestly, reading plugs on a street car is pretty much a waste of time. All you are really seeing is mixture at idle. From what you describe it sounds lean. :D

If you don't see little speckles of metal, then you are most likely safe. Hard to say if rich/lean with mixed driving, as Dennis says. If no WB-O2, then 1/4 mile passes (with backups) and a jet/rod change and more passes will tell you if it's rich or lean (at WOT).

Race truck made it's debut as a tow rig and at the drag strip today.

It towed flawlessly and with much more power it handled the hills great. It was a lot nicer to drive not having to get a big run on every little grade.

Micah (my son) raced it all day and pretty much babied it off the line but it ran great and knocked off a 17.55 @ 76 mph. Not bad at all for a flying brick with my mild build. With some carb tuning and a fearless driver like me  it should run some 17.30-40. That is a drop of almost 2 seconds in ET form stock if memory serves me correct.

Also sold the black truck at the races today, so this truck is now my only truck!

Also forgot to mention, that on Friday afternoon when I towed to the track with it for the first time, I also checked the temperature of the external transmission cooler. Greg Ondayko came over with his infared heat gun as soon as I got there and the temperature was 175-180F. Some folks were saying they might not cool enough, but that seems fine to me. May need to check it on a 100 degree day too. But for now I think I'm good.

Sounds great, Rick. Actually, I don't think you want to run the trans much colder than that for best wear and performance.

Fluid temp of 180 would be right where you want. :D

Thanks guys, that is what I was thinking. I am kind of excited about hitting the road in it to go to Bristol. I plan to put the 500 CFM boosters in it and some new metering rods and it should be ready to go 300 miles.

I installed the 500 boosters into my 600 Edelbrock (Thanks Lou) a couple days ago, as well as going 2 steps leaner and the truck runs really great now. There was a soft spot when taking off under mild throttle that was completely eliminated. Seat of the pants feeI is just the same as before. I ran it about 65 miles of all local driving and I drove the speed limit the whole time.  Mileage was 18.73. I know that is not enough miles to get a good check, but I was excited to see how it did. Next tank I will try and get a couple hundred miles on it before checking. I also went 2 steps leaner on the secondary side and left them hooked up.

I need to get another A/F gauge to really be able dial this in, but I am pretty happy. Going to have Ryan and Andrew Shank come over and give me a hand swapping in the 2.94 gears to cruise on down the highway to Bristol. Should be able to easily get 20 MPG.

While the rear is out I am going to swap the 11X3" brakes that are on my race car onto the truck which has 10X2 1/2" brakes.More to come.

Just got done my 2.76 (Thought they were 2.94's) gear swap for the ride to Bristol. Pretty sure I lost a full second off my quarter mile time, and all of it in the first 60 feet!  Cruises nice though and mileage should be good.

Truck ran flawless on the way to Bristol on Friday. I filled up just before I hit the Interstate and ran 67-70MPH for about 380 miles. Mileage on the first fill up was 19.7.

I made 8 passes over the weekend and the best time was a 19.22 @ 71MPH with most in the 19.40-50 range. So with the gear change to 2.76 I lost almost 2 seconds and 5 MPH. Some of that was the air and some of that was the altitude I'm sure.

I am also pretty sure that A/C is going to be in my future for the truck. It is just to hot to drive for 8 or 9 hours in the August heat! Maybe I am just getting soft.

Yeah, Ron gave me some info on a very reasonably priced A/C system. Pretty sure that will be on order!

Ran another 380 miles and 2 fill ups on the way home from Bristol today and the truck got 20.39 and 21.89 MPG. Can't be complaining about that. I am really happy with that!
