Contemplating purchasing a hi-stall converter for my slant project. I have a good understanding of stall speed as it relates to power applied and that advertised stall speed is more V8 relative.
I figure my engine will make somewhere around 200 hp give or take.
The car will be a weekend street car with am occasional trip to the drag strip.
With the cam I have I would like a real stall speed of 3000+.
Do I really need an anti-ballooning plate (whatever that is), furnace brazing, etc?
Thanks, in advance guys.

Pick a converter company and give them a call. I had Midwest do 2 for me and have been happy with both. At 200 horse I would not worry about a balloon plate unless I was going to maybe start hitting it with nitrous or do a turbo.

If you use a good converter builder, then they can honestly advise you about whether you need that stuff. I think only my current turbo converter has that (350-400 HP).

I have been pleased with Midwest Converter (Rockford, IL), Continental Converter (Inglewood/LA, CA), and Edge Racing Converters. I would steer clear of anything else. I have been working with R&R Converter in Asheville, NC for my turbo converter, but I have not been super happy yet. They keep missing the stall speed and we are on the 3rd iteration (tranny pull and send it back).

Make sure you get no bigger than a 10" and these places will most likely do a 9.5" for what you want.

All the best,

Lou

Using balloon parts does not hurt anything except for possibly the wallet.

It keeps the converter id and od from distorting undet load and rpm.... for a heavy race application that sees alot of passes its not a bad idea... is it needed for most slant applications... maybe not.
