I acquired a 1968 225 Slant 6 with attached automatic transmission. How do I identify which transmission it is? It's covered with dirt and grime; identifying marks not visible. I've heard that it might be a TorqueFlite A904, but unable to verify. Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks

There's an easy way to tell: if there's an adaptor plate between the engine and bellhousing, its a 727 transmission (highly unlikely). Otherwise, 904.

The 727 is 35" long from bellhousing to yoke. It's a big beefy SOB. Unless someone specifically installed it for some reason after it left the factory, it's a 904.

Even easier: look under the passenger side of the car. If the pan is straight, it's a 904. If it has a bulge in the side, it's a 727.

Along driver's side of and to rear of transmission case (if I am recalling correctly) there is a stamped part number which can be decoded.
