I left my gas cap on convertible boot right in front of my face so I wouldn't forget it while filling er up . So, it was chrome with black horizontal bar. I've seen some on EBAY, but are listed for 78 and later - they have two phillips screws on backside holding mount with the securing tabs - I think the backside of mine was integral (welded). My valiant is a 64 early A - is there a difference with later models fitting? Btw, the ones listed for early A's are at least twice as much $!

I think I have got this correct - early Valiants and other variants did not use vented gas caps as the fuel tank was vented. Not sure up to what year, maybe 63/64.

If you use a gas cap that is vented, and that probably includes a lockable gas cap, the fuel will seep out of the tank and maybe mess up your paintwork or leave an ugly stain!

So if you see a NOS and expensive lockable gas cap on Ebay for your 61 Valiant think twice before you bid.

Interchange on the cap you need is '60-'66 A-body (that is '60-'66 Valiant, '61-'62 Lancer, '63-'66 Dart, '64-'66 Barracuda), only. These cars take a non-vented cap. I have one locking and a few non-locking New Old Stock caps—good metal ones. Send me a PM if you'd like to buy one.

(Also this thread probably belongs in "Parts Wanted")
