figured it's time to get this out there since I plan on going hard into getting this finished ASAP (selling my new Challenger to get 'er done, I'm done with waiting).

'70 Barracuda, 225 /6, A230 3spd, B5 Blue exterior, blue interior. This base Barracuda was made at the LA plant the 1st week of e-body production (my friend Al in So-Cal has a sister /6 Challenger made within 2 days of mine. he was in the March '91 Slant Six news. he has owned it since '73 and has put over 500K miles on it). Pretty bare bones base model. My dad bought it in '73 and drove it until @ '87 when it was parked in the back 40 .... took me 20 years to convince him I wanted to restore it for myself and not just flip it.

I've torn it completely down over the last several years and now it's about ready for paint after having several thousand$$ worth of metal repair work and going over every seam with chassis saver. paint costs have gotten absolutely ridiculous over the last several years, but I've found a solid Maaco shop that does a few classics a year (solid google rating and reviews).

For the engine my plan is to do a proper power build, but reasonable enough to be a daily driver - living in Denver I can driver 8-10months out of the year and plan on actually taking advantage of that and driving it. I've been collecting a few parts here and there, but I'm about at a stop point until I can talk to a builder so I don't buy the wrong stuff.

That will be a sweet ride! Will you go to a 4-speed? With that heavier car and a 3.91-4.30 gear in the rear, it would run sweet with the OD transmission.

I want to do an 833 OD unit (I'm just not sure if it will work or not) and probably 3.55 gears so I can get decent highway usage to commute with it (I truly plan on driving it for 1/2 the year+). I picked up a 489 cased 8 3/4 for $300 that I'll replace the 7 1/4 unit.

3.55 are Ok too, but 3.91 on the street with OD are fine unless you are cruising over 70mph all day.

PS. Why would the 4 speed not work? It should be almost a bolt in with the proper belhousing, shifter...etc

my daily commute involves @ 30min of 75.

I've inquired with a few people over the last few years and several 'experts' said it wouldn't work, but talking to Brewers a couple years back I seem to recall him saying it could be made to work. so I'm still in the discovery/figuring it out stage. figuring out the proper Bell is a huge piece of that obviously .... would a truck OD bell work? what other vehicles had a /6 OD available that might work? I dunno. I assume as long as I have a proper bell the shifter will fit right in the factory hole. definitely more research needed.

Your car came from the factory with a 4 speed ( In V-8s), which is identical to the OD in size and bolt pattern. Your car has a Slant 6 with a manual transmission. So if you get the OD belhousing and transmission it should drop right in place. I am not sure what they are saying won't work? Your car does have the hump for the shifter linkage correct?

The Volare/Aspen cars had the OD transmission and well as a lot of 80-87 D100 trucks. The truck and car belhousing are the same. The truck transmission may have a longer tailshaft, so the car transmission would probably be the better bet.

yup, factory 3spd, manual tunnel with all the linkage. that makes sense to me, I'm not sure why a couple others said it wouldn't work in the past. but that is absolutely the route I prefer to go and I'd just order a rebuilt 833 OD with an e-body tailshaft from Brewers

It is just the OD bellhousing (and any related clutch fork/linkage for that bellhousing) that you need. Otherwise, no big deal. I have an A833 OD in my 62 Valiant with 3.55 gears and it works great for hwy cruising to 80 MPH and higher.

I hope you are planning to put good/large discs on the front (and preferably rear too) since commuting at high speeds with modern cars in traffic can be sketchy with stock size/type brakes (even 11" factory discs). I also strongly advise modern (hopefully wider) tires and larger wheels.

disks in front is a must IMO for safety, the rears I'll probably keep drums though. currently sitting on 14" rallies and the stock steelies are 14" too .... debating on this one ... I'll put redlines on the 14" steelies for show, but will either use the 14" rallies for daily use or upgrade to 15", haven't decided yet. last items on the list though, paint and drivetrain are my next priorities.

The issue with the OD is none were built with the E-body shifter mount location on the tailshaft. This could worked out by using the correct tailshaft housing. Brewer's should be able to fix you up.

I bet if you got the truck a833 and made a plate to locate the shifter properly or bought a b/e body a833 tailhousing
Then the Overdrive could be made to work.

I forgot about shifter location I think one of the trucks I had had two shifter locations on the tailshaft. Where is the E body location at?

The B/E tailshaft housing started in 70. IIRC, the front position was B body, the rear was E. B body the shifter is up under the dash.
