Got something little done today. Installed pistons to rods, next is to install those in block. Also tried "new" wheels under car, needs a little spacers to clear brake caliber at front and rear spring. 11,75" brakes are tight fit in 14" wheel :)

Pistons are in. Made cam stop and welded large washer and 3/8 unf nut to timing cover and used rocker screw. Also received Romac balancer.

4 years since last update

Small block is out, slant is in. Not the turbo engine yet, but stock rebuilt 170 with cam and head from turbo engine build. Head is shaved too much for boost, compression ended up to 10,15:1. Maybe it could be boosted with e85, but nearest e85 station is 40 miles away :(

Current engine is the earlier 170 that was in before 318. It needed to bore 60 oversize, luckily I had 60 over pistons with 170 rods connected. Block deck needed a little shave. New bearings and timing set. Crank was in good shape, stock size bearing were ok. Oil passages and stock aluminium oil pump are ported and drilled. Bottom end is made with really small budget, probably ~$300 total.
Head is ported big valve head. I had to cut the guides shorter, otherwise it is made by someone else. Maybe Ford valves, a little longer and thinner stem. Cam is regrinded locally 236in/230ex@.040" (1mm) with 0.43/.425 lift. Valve springs are stock 340 shimmed to stock installed height. Chromemoly retainers and keepers. Intake manifold is 2 barrel from marine-engine. Almost like super six, but without egr and water circulation under carb. At first I'll put BBD from 318, but I think I am going to try some different carbs before efi. Original electronic distributor with hei-mod.

At this moment, I am in the middle of building headers 8)

Car itself has been about same all this time, only rear end ratio has been changed to 3,91.

After photobucket f`ckd itself, I have used this instead:

Summer went with kids at home, not much garagetime. Now that schools started, there is a few hours more to use. Making headers was a HUGE job. I have made 2 slant headers before, but that was 16 years ago. Lots of years to forget how much job it was  Primaries are 1.5", secondaries 1.75", some kind of selfmade merged collectors and 2.5" exhaust with long superturbo muffler. Not exactly equal length, about within 1.5".

Alternator is from mid 90s 1.9 diesel VW, it was direct fit to stock mounts. Of course it had multigroove pulley, but found correct pulley from pile of alternators.

I've been driving it about 40 miles now. It's not fast compared to what it used to be with small block, but it is quicker than what 170s that I remembered

I have a question of timing curve. What kind of total timing 170 likes? I think I have read that it is more than what 225 likes? I just can't find anything info now. Distributor is now stock 225, nothing changed yet. Timing at idle ~17 degrees now, haven't checked total yet.

I would shoot for 34-36 total (max mech advance but vac disconnected). Then tune from there...

I set total to 34. At idle it's now 14, but it seems to like more. So there is some slot welding and filing waiting. Also changed heavy spring to light, max advance is about 2000 now. No pinging at testdrive.

A little tweaking to timing, 20/34 now. Quarter mile day tomorrow, really interested to see how it runs

Right after shooting those pictures, I had to mow the lawn, noticed how long it was :D

It's 50 miles to airport where we keep our test and tune day. First longer drive for new engine. It did not run perfectly at low rpm range. It was a pretty quiet day overall and I took a couple passes. I was hoping a little better, but I believe with more adjusting it will get there. Better run was 17,349/76,9mph.

Few pictures, most of drivers had already left when I had time to take camera :(

I've had idling problems, it does not want to idle at all. Really hard to start at cold too. Feels like vacuum leak, but I havent found any. Today I changed Offenhauser intake and new Edelbrock 1403 carb. Problems solved 8) Idle is good now and starts immediatally. Feels like much more power too 8)

Shortly, stock 1bbl intake modded to BMW throttle body and injectors. LS1 coils. Romac balancer with custom made trigger wheel. VW Bosch alternator moved to drivers side and custom bracket made for it and vr trigger sensor. Fuel pump assembly is from Audi A6 and it is fitted in new tank. Fuel lines will be 10mm nylon line with quick connectors.

Excellent. I love your rear/AC pulley trigger wheel solution! How did you locate the wheel to make it concentric before welding to the pulley piece?

Thanks :D

Triggerwheel had smaller hole first. It was cut in lathe to fit to balancer hub. Then I welded it to pulley from 6 holes and cut the inner part away.

Today I fitted fuel lines under car. I got the connectors from hardware store, nothing special there. Had to cut through torsionbar rail so fuel lines can go straight through. Welded a piece of square thick wall tube to reinforce rail. Made a mount for Malpassi fuel pressure regulator to inner fender
