Yup. As soon as I get the driveshaft fabricated and as soon as I get the time, I am going to swap it. I took a drive to the dump today and the acceleration is just awful.

You should be able to buy a torque converter for less than $100 if you wanted to get it done quickly.

Really? Everyplace I have been looking online says $170 minimum. I can try calling around locla transmission shops, but really, if I am going to go through the trouble of pulling the trans to replace the converter, I think I would rather just switch to a 904. I really don't need a 727 and getting a driveshaft rebuilt and cut down will cost about the same as a torque converter.

SeaTac Transmission says $125-150 exchange. So things have gone up since I last shopped torque converters. Cliff at SeaTac Trans 253-475-0318 was my information source.

Have you pulled the starter or inspection cover to see if you have the wide ring gear or the narrow one? If it's the 1/2" wide ring gear then it's a 12" low stall converter. The 1" wide ring gear is the 11" higher stall converter and I understand that there are even low/high stall versions of the 11". If you have the 12" converter that would explain a lot about the poor stoplight performance.

Thanks for the info! I knew thee were different size converters but didn't know how to check without puling the trans. I haven't pulled the starter yet, but I will give it a shot ASAP.

It certainly does feel like a low-stall converter. Like stalling at 700 RPM! I can floor it from a stop at the bottom of a hill and it will barely accelerate and creep up the hill. But once I get above 20 MPH it seems to do OK.

If I remember right, the last driveshaft I had cut down and rebuilt by Drivelines Northwest was around $150. I have a rebuilt 904 under my workbench so the cost and labor to (a) replace the 727 converter or (b) switch to a 904 are basically the same.

I think after you spent the money for the 727 TC you'd probably end up rebuilding the 727 as you have the skills to do that, in which case swapping the already rebuilt 904 is a better plan. Its a 40 year old truck, it's time to rebuild. Your truck looks pretty good to me.

Thanks! Yeah, the body is OK, but everything is due for rebuild or replace. All in good time! A 904 swap is in the cards as soon as I get the driveshaft sorted and get time.

Most of these surviving trucks in South Texas have badly cracked dash pads from exposure to the sun.

My instrument cluster has faded to purple, but the vinyl dash surround is surprisingly ok.

Been aware for a while due to work keeping me busy.

But last night I was able to sneak away and replace the brake master cylinder on my truck. The brake pedal no longer creeps down while I am stopped and brake is no longer an all or nothing proposition. It used to be that barely touching the brakes would lock them up solid and almost put you through the windshield. Driving this truck in the rain was definitely not possible. Now the brakes work properly. :D

Next project is replacing the teency and barely useable rear view mirrors and then replacing the 727 with a 904.

Hey Reed- I may have asked this before, but- that's a Slant with a 727, and you are thinking of changing to a 904? Does that year peakup use the Mopar adapter between the /6 and the trans? Just curious, as those adapter assemblies with spacer & bolts are seemingly very hard to find now. I understand they were common in 1960's & 70's Dodge trucks with /6.

Nope- my trans is a slant six case 727. The real deal. The 727 to slant adapter was used on 64-67 Dodge A100 trucks and vans. My understanding is that it requires you use the low-mount truck starter. You might try contacting Wildcat Autowrecking downin Oregon. Last time I checked, which was years ago, they had the adapters in stock for something like $275 each.

If my truck had the adapter I would jump straight to the A500.

UPDATE!

Last week I secured the final large piece I will need to complete my planned build for this truck. I was able to get a short bed step side bed ff of a 1980 Dodge that is in OK and mostly complete condition. The stepside bed is necessary to permit the mounting of the exhaust stacks a la a Little Red Express, except I am building a "Little Slant Express." 8) With this large part secured I can now start chipping away at the multitude of little projects on the truck.

I still need to track down a few bits and pieces to do a proper install, but the main part of it is obtained.

Thanks! It will be a long slow process, but it will be worth it in the end.
