Some pics of the running '34 Dodge Brothers Coupe are now up here:

https://www.flickr.com/photos/16910097@ ... 0302809177

I have owned the car for just over 1 year now, and I got it running a few weeks ago. 200 miles and 5 drag passes so far. Such a ball to drive and be one with.

Mr. Leighton Drake did a wonderful job owning (with Judy Drake!) and modifying this car. My job is to not screw up all that nice care and work, but still make it my own and enjoy it.

Best time so far is 9.64 @ 71.5 MPH at Motormile Dragway (10/7/22).

More details to follow...

Lou Madsen

And when Did the Drakes Begin Owning this car? when It was like 24 years old or something?

Cool stuff, great find / buy, and keeping the faith of having Slant 6 relics in the Slanted family.

Thanks, guys. I am priviledged to own this piece of (highly modded!) history.

Judy and Leighton courted in this car in the mid-late 50s. 1956 or 1957 is when they bought it. While they were dating, Leighton found it, and Judy put up the money for it! Then they got married and Leighton never had to pay Judy back... True joint ownership.

Lou

You do, and no, I think Leighton Put all of that A/C Stuff in there that Lou does not have time for.

No need for the driver to be cool just the Engine has to be cool.

Car reminds me quite a bit of the Erikson's 34 Plymouth.

Lou, very nice
I see front wheel disk brakes in one of the photos.
What frame and suspension is under it, sure looks clean.

Thanks everyone for the kind comments.

I did not install the AC, but it was working before I swapped motors. I still need to put the right pulley on the crank to run it again, but it is still charged. Leighton installed it, and it's not really my style, but if it works I'll use it!

- 4 wheel disc brakes, and not sure what they are yet. I seem to recall Mustang II type spindles, but not sure. Probably GM stuff.
- Suspension is factory "Deluxe" 34 Coupe. Factory independent king pin suspension, which is way cool. LCAs are super long. Front shocks are lever type and are integrated into the UCAs. Rear shocks are modern double-adjustable RideTech with factory 34-type leafs and an aftermarket sway bar.
- 8.75" rear axle with 2.94 SG (set up for FAST drag passes with turbo motor - we'll get back to that). Hope to swap to 3.91s soon.
- No substantial rust on the whole car, only surface rust. Original paint on the main body, but the fenders were repainted in the 1950s. Leighton said he regretted doing that. Yes, it is super clean and super solid for an 88 year old car. Lots of thick metal on this thing. You can bounce on the running boards and they do not flex.
- Power rack'n'pinion steering (Cavalier?) and power brakes (MC under the driver seat). Funny thing recently is that Victoria commented on how stiff the brakes were when she drove it. It didn't even phase me. Gee, I forgot to hook up the PB hose when I swapped motors! Now the power booster is hooked to vacuum and working.
- 904 trans with 3800 stall Edge converter. Lokar shifter.
- Engine assembled by me with parts obtained from various sources. The shortblock came from Judy and was an early turbo Simca shortblock. Cam is Oregon #346, degreed at 101 centerline. Head came from Bonneville Bob Dally, and ported by Wes King in Idaho. 10.2:1 comp. Aussiespeed headers and Demon 625 "goggle valve 2ndary" carb on Clifford intake. 2X2" into single 2.5" super turbo muffler and out the side.
- 99 Sebring seats (installed by me) with integral shoulder belts.

Much of the suspension, brakes, steering were rebuilt and/or installed by Fatman Fabrications in Charlotte, NC. I need to go down there and see if they have records on what was done, because I only have a few receipts/records.

I feel like the car should run low/mid 9s in the 1/8th and mid/high 14s in the 1/4 with different axle gears and some jetting. 14:1 AFR at WOT now, so it's lean. It is definitely a street car, though.

Yes, I will be racing the car at Motormile in 2 weeks! Come on down to see it run and get a ride...

Lou

3.91 SG rear is installed and road tested. It even feels good on the hwy at 3600 RPM, which is 70-75 MPH. The car is really coming into its own now. I can hop in at the drop of a hat and drive off with no shenanigans.

Lou
