| Post subject: | After market re-built power brake units? |
Planning the project cars- 74 Sport and 75 Swinger. Both have the factory original power brake diaphragm/master assemblies installed. I can budget swapping the units out for "rebuilt" (using the term loosely). Any experience with what brands or sources for these? I worry about the old rubber in the originals I have. If there are kits, I could perhaps rebuild the diaphragms on the work bench. Ideas??? |

Do not piss away money on the garbage "remanufactured" units you can buy at a parts store (Cardone, etc). Go directly to Booster Dewey. |

I have a "Cardone" "remanufactured" unit on my 76 D100. It is no better than the factory unit I took off. The brakes are super touchy and go into full lockup unless I am careful how I apply rake pressure. When I get time and money I am shipping my original unit out to Booster Dewey. I tried a "Cardone" reman unit on my 82 Ramcharger and removed it. It had been rebuilt with an internal fault that make the brakes self-apply if I drove faster than 7 miles per hour. I almost went through the windshield three times in the first block of the test drive after I installed it. Seriously, I would let the truck idle in gear and once it picked up speed the brake pedal would drop and the brakes locked up without me touching either the gas or brake pedal. I replaced it with an original Mopar booster from a junked 86 truck. Reman boosters aren't available for the D series trucks or ramchargers anymore, but I still will never put a cardone booster on any vehicle I own. Remember- "Cardone? Cardon't." |

Greg I'm not sure, but I am guessing it is a failed seal or valve that allows the full application of engine vacuum immediately upon pressing the pedal. For all I know, the Cardone "remanufacturing" process involves nothing more than a can of spray paint. |
