Given the choice to rebuild a BBD with the bowl vent tube or without it which way would you go.
What are the pros / cons of the bowl vent, would it stay open to the air on a 69 Dart?

I would look for one that has a flat metal top. The only one I own like that happens to have 1 1/2" throttle bores vs the smaller 1 1/4".

Probably has richer metering.

I wouldn't base my decision on the presence or absence of the bowl vent tube. It's irrelevant whether the carb has it or not, on your '69; if you wind up using a carb with a bowl vent tube, you'd just leave it open (no hose or cap on it). There are a lot of other carb features and configurations that actually influence suitability for use on a 225. And, of course, it only makes sense to put effort and money into a carburetor that's in good enough shape to be worth rebuilding. Most all cores you encounter today will need the throttle body rebushed.

It would be unwise to use the large BBD (1½" throttle bore, large mount pattern, big 5" air cleaner base circle) from the 361 & 383 V8s. Stick with the smaller BBD (1¼" throttle bore, "Super Six" mount pattern, small 2-5/8" air cleaner base circle) for effective use on a slant-6.

I have 3 cores. 1 has the bowl vent 2 do not, they are all off of super six cars. I was trying to determine if there was any reason to use one type over the other.

Ah, you aren't talking about no-bowl-vent-on-a-pre-'71, you're talking about no-bowl-vent-on-a-post-'74. My preference in that case, all other factors being equal, would be to build one of the ones with a bowl vent.

They really all have bowl vents, correct? I went and checked all of mine and they all have vent lines for a tube to go to a charcoal canister. Just 2 have the plastic fittings on top of the bowl with an external rod or plunger for the accelerator pump. The other has no exposed plunger and the vent fitting comes out of the side and is metal.

The metering rods and jets won't interchange between the two types.

After measuring the throttle plates they all measure @ 1 3/8" maybe a little more. So is that a 1.25 or a 1.5" carb?

The rebuild kit I have for the metal vent tubed one is a kit that fits "later" 1 1/4" BBDs. So that blows my theory that this carb is older than the ones with the plastic vent tube.

This kit covers Jeeps 77-87, AMC 77-87, Mopar 74-84.

How can this kit fit Carter carbs 85-87 if Carter was suppossed to have gone out of business in 84??

Some post-'74 and most post-'77 carbs don't have external bowl vents. These without an external vent have only the internal vent.

The type with plastic fitting is an early-style BBD (up through...'76, I believe). The "raised top" or "tin top" unit with the side-exit metal vent pipe is the later "solid fuel" BBD.

1¼".

Carter didn't go out of business in '84.

I thought they quit making the Thermoquads (actually went out of business anf later Federal Mogul bought the tooling. ) Chrysler went to the Quadrajet on cars and trucks for 85. I have 2 Mopar Qjets one is perched on my 360 for everyday driving.

IIRC I heard that the new Carter AFB's (not the Eddie version) say Weber on them?

my case is no external bowl vent port on the BBD carb. this is '77 version from volare, bought as rebuilt on rockauto. doing holey 1920 to supersix conversion with super six air cleaner and other accessiories, retaining emission control. car is 73 dart sport.

Can u please help on where I should connect the canister hose, should it go to a port in the bottom of air cleaner? there is one spare port there.

thank you

For 1973 should be simple, one line to tank vent, one to carb bowl vent not used cap it off and canister purge line, which goes to purge port on carb. On bbd purge port is right between idle mixture screws

ok thanks for advice :)
having read all the stuff I understand I connect my 3 port canister:
from left:
1 carburator bowl vent: the carb doesn't have a bowl vent port so I just I cap the port off at the canister.
2 fuel tank -> fuel tank evaporation hose
3 canister purge port -> carb purge port (between the two idle mixture screws)

In this case any thoughts on what is the purpose of the spare port on the bottom of air filter housing (see pic)?

That's for an exhaust air injection aspirator system your car doesn't have. Securely cap it off.
