Hi all

I am cleaning up all my slant/valiant stuff - derusting organizing and so on

There is a sump amongst these thing and as my current sump has a dent in it - this one not, i am tempted to replace mine - was wondering what mods can be done - and can you hot dip galvanize a sump for protection? or is powder coating OK - it had a collection of rusted bolts in it - after a week long soak in derusting agent - not acid based - there is a marvelous collection of mopar nuts and bolts all phosphate treated, but there is some pitting on the inside of the sump - but it is not rusted out.

Suggestions comments please - what about baffles to keep oil in check?

what did the cleaner pit the metal or did it remove sludge and now you see pits in the metal?as long as its not leaking just sand and clean it good then paint it with engine paint.

Removed sludge now I see the pits - it is not leaking

I had all the tinware (oil we-say-pan, you-say-sump; timing cover, rocker cover, etc.) powder coated on my last aluminum 225 buildup. The benefit was much quieter engine operation. I was not anticipating the apparently very large insulating value of powder coating. The drawback was more(!) difficult oil pan gasket installation. The gasket rail had been powder coated along with the outside, which made it even easier for the front left and right "Bermuda Triangle" areas of the gasket to slide/squish out from between the block and the pan. Difficult oil leak was result. If I had known this would happen, I could likely have headed off the difficulty by gluing in place that portion of the gasket with RTV Silicone. I do not now recall if the inside of the pan (and covers) was fully powder coated or just had "overspray". It seems to me powder coating the inside of the pan as well as the outside would add to the sound insulation and make a surface easier for oil and gunk to slide off when changing oil.

There are several discussion of baffles, such as HERE and HERE. They often get linked with discussions of windage trays and crank scrapers, as well.

How would Glyptal do in the pan?

lost cause for now bottom is rusted out in 2 places :( top part healthy - will use as a base for a future deep sump design
