Post subject:  Engine Dying After Start-up

Hmmmm. Got a BBD carb for my Super Six. I adjusted it from the outside best I could, "faked" the smoggies on the car, since the carb was pre-smog. Started the car and it runs better than ever, right RPM on choke and engine revs perfectly....for about 30 seconds. Then it acts like it ran out of gas. I tried it without revving, same thing. I'm thinking float level, but then I give it a pump or two and it fires right back up and runs great...for about 30 seconds. Still thinking float, but geez, really? I have to take the entire thing back apart to do that? Someone tell me it could be something other than float level.

I guess I can take a hint. :)

Post subject:  Yep...

It sounds like it's running off what's in the carb only, like it's not getting more fuel to keep things going...

So I think you answered your own question....unless the float is OK and the fuel pump isn't doing it's job for crap.

Good Luck.

Well, I pulled the new carb off and put the crappy one back on. It runs just like it did before I swapped out. Ran a fuel pump test just to make sure ( the fuel pump is new). And it kept running. The "new" carb is from a 318, but I moved the choke controls over from the 225 one.
Yes, an eye-roll is def in order.

Trash in the needle/seat? If you have good fuel supply TO the carb, as proven by the old carb, maybe it's not getting INTO it in sufficient quantity.

The inlet assembly can be removed without opening the carb, but I would recommend going inside anyway. Used carbs are always full of surprises. There could be scale floating around the bowl that will give you all sorts of wild geese.

Cold "start then stalls"... with-out any black smoke and "chuggung" is usually caused by the choke flap being pulled open too far, after start-up.

Spread the "V" on the choke operating link to reduce the amount of choke pull-off", after start-up.
