What is your opinion of the Davis Unified Ignition distributer for a slant six? Good? Bad? Overpriced?

I would give it a try... why not.

It looks like an hei based system.

Grossly overpriced, fraudulently described, thoughtlessly configured rubbish. Three hunnerd and nine dollars for a Chinese knockoff distributor and an HEI module? Sucker born every minute. By doing the HEI upgrade you'll wind up with at least as good a spark as this Davis scam, and with better resistance to real-world conditions like (stay with me here, this gets complicated and you have to use your imagination) water splashing the distributor as you drive.

For $309 I'd expect a custom timing curve to go with that...
For $309 I'd expect breakfast in bed the morning after.

Thanks Guys! I was afraid it was overpriced and getting hyped by Hot Rod in their three part article Making Mopar Slant-Six Sense. Maybe the author got breakfast in bed......

I have to admit I was tempted by the DUI distributor but after reading several posts I opted for the HEI/do it yourself version. I purchased a NOS Mopar electronic distributor, GM module and ford style coil. My question: Will the stock distributor give me the right advance curve or should I modify it? Still building the engine but running a 2106 cam, Weber 32/36 carb.

Depends on which NOS stock distributor you end up getting. Every year had different part number, plus different often between car/truck, hi altitude, California emissions etc. And the timing curve is exactly what was different between them
Duster idiot and others can elaborate, and know the differences between them, which one(s) are better suited and what to modify on the less ideal versions.
I too thought about getting a DUI setup for a couple of my 318s but never did because something didn't seem right, seemed awfully gimmicky, the "made in China" was the final straw against it

Volaredon is absolutely correct, a factory set up distributor from a heavy vehicle like a truck or a station wagon will have a much different advance curve ( spring set up and vacuum can) than a lighter vehicle. The good news is spring kits are ( or at least were, bigslantsix fan was a seller) easy to come by. Adjustable vacuum cans are out there as well as information on how to check / modify the distributor regulator to get the best out of it for your vehicle., Posting the tag numbers as DI mentioned will start the process.

Didn't know there were differences but it makes sense.

The number on the tag is 3874714 and a 28 6 above it.
