The size of our database has grown beyond what is allowed by out Internet Host. The biggest problem is the "search index", which is used to search the forum. Because if this, I have had to turn off the search function until I can find another solution. Updating our "package" would cost between 10 and 30 TIMES what we are paying now.

I am also trying other setup options, so the search may or may not work as I try different things.

You can always search outside the Forum with Google, DuckDuckGo, Bing, etc. or whatever search engine you choose. I entered @slantsix.org turbo in the address bar of Firefox with Google as the default search engine and all the search results were from this Forum, but this approach didn't work with DuckDuckGo.

Thanks for your work, Chuck. I guess it is possible to have too much of a good thing.

I'm confused.........

I just used the 'search' above between 'FAQ' and 'Members'

I've also seen some forums incorporate Google search from the forum instead of a built-in search.

Search is working at the moment. As I mentioned, I am trying different things. I have seen the Google search function incorporated into some forums but I think it searches the whole Internet, not just the forum. I have not tried to install it because I know that some people are concerned over Google's lack of privacy.

If it continues to work like it is at this time then I have found a good solution that lowered the database usage by half.

Thanks, Chuck! What about going back to what we had before where this site would not host pics, only go through links??

Cheers, Lou

Lou, pictures are not the problem. They are not stored in a database. It's the word search feature that uses up the space. I seem to have it licked at the moment. I hope that if anyone has trouble searching they will post here.

You can use google to limit results to just this site by adding "site:www.slantsix.org" to the search terms on google's page. For example:

site:www.slantsix.org billet aluminum head

+1
Google site search works very well. I use it all the time. All the familiar search tools work the same way as a regular Google search.

Like this to find this exact thread using [site:slantsix.org "The size of our database has grown beyond"]
--> https://www.google.com/search?client=firefox-b-1-d&q=site%3Aslantsix.org+%22The+size+of+our+database+has+grown+beyond%22

This is how most web sites use Google for search functions.
It's limited, in that it won't search only specific areas of a forum or search only posts from a specific user. It won't search into the private forums like Social Corner.
Still, it's free and simple to implement.
