I have a valve cover leak, that was not there before I adjusted the valve lash.

New valve cover gasket from "Engine-tech" which did not seem to fit very well. Also have a leaking oil pan gasket from changing the timing chain and gears, although it is hard to tell due to the volume of oil coming from the valve cover.

Is using a new valve cover gasket with some Hylomar on the valve cover side the best solution, OR just put it on dry, and use better gaskets next time?

What do you suggest based upon your experience.

Use a reputable brand of gasket, without goop, after making sure the valve cover's gasket rail isn't bent (e.g., fix the distortion caused by past overtightening with careful use of a hammer and wood block).

Thank You Dan.

I never use gasket sealer and always make sure the VC rail is straight and the bolt holes are not "pulled down" too far from previous tightening.

Thanks Lou,

A new gasket should show up tomorrow. I fixed the VC bolt holes yesterday, and just had the thought of putting the VC on a piece of glass to make sure it is straight and flat end to end.

Two valve cover gaskets here. I figured they would be the same, but decided to order a Victor Reniz and a Fel-pro just to compare. Have already tried an "engine-tec and it was my least favorite.

The Victor Reinz gasket measures .161 tall

The Fel Pro measures .148 tall

Maybe more importantly the Fel Pro appears to be a better fit, and the tabs that go into the valve cover actually are in the correct place.

The tabs on the Victor are wider than the slots in the Valve cover.. and generally the Victor takes more fussing to get installed. I ended up cutting the tabs off to get the gasket to lay flat, and installed it.

If you have a choice, my vote is for a Fel Pro at this time.
