Looking to just get a sanity check from someone on degreeing my cam shaft (hughes STL1612I6-12). My lobe separation angle is 112 deg and my installed centerline is 108 deg. Never done it before so trying to get it nailed down/do it correctly.

Set up: I installed the cam about one tooth out from dot to dot (did this mult. times and its the closest i got to 108 deg.) and found TDC on the intake stroke. I installed the piston stop and rotated the the piston counter clockwise till it hit TDC (wrote down the deg) and rotated it back the other way clockwise and wrote down the deg. I added them and divided by 2 and set the pointer to 0 on the degree wheel to that middle number.

Degreeing: So once i have it at TDC i set up my dial indicator up for the intake lobe with the push rod (the cylinder head is off) and find the highest lift of the lifter and set my dial indicator to 0 then i then rotate it counter clock wise 0.050" (going a little past then going clock wise to it to take up the slack in the timing chain) before max lift and record the degs. Then I rotate it clockwise to 0.050" past max lift and record the degrees. I got 148.5/65.5 degs, i added them and divided by 2 to get 107 deg. I did the same for 0.060" past max lift on either side of the lobe and got 152.5/61.5, added them and divided by 2 to get 107 deg again.

If i did it complely a@@ backwards or wrong any help would be greatly appreciated.

Reading it, as opposed to my doing it, sounds like you are correct. 107 degrees as opposed to 108 degrees is fine. But what you found about being one tooth off dot to dot, is a prime example of why you should always degree a cam, rather than just throwing it in dot to dot.

Thanks, yeah the proof is definitely in the pudding as they say. I'm glad i decided to check before i just lined it up dot to dot.

Degreeing a cam is something that confuses me every time probably because I don't do it regularly
