Hello everyone ....I'm really new to your forum as far as posting goes.but have been around a long time. I ran a 63 dart in the low 13's last time my son and I raced. well so much for my lackluster history.
I have a very important question as the new project begins. I have a 170 block w/198 crank and a good set of 2.2 pistons. I am using a 231 buick turbo with the original turbo spread bore carburetor. If you run between 6 and 8 pounds boost pressure what would be the highest SAFE compression ratio possible. I want to run pump gas. Thank you guys in advance as I consider this forum to be the place to to learn the right way to build a /6. Also using 170 shot preened rod. imp.huh?

I would have to run the numbers, but I don't think that combination of parts will work. What crank are you planning on using?

Uh, 198 rods are 1.3" longer than 170 rods. That means an impossible compression distance of about 0.45" with the standard stroke.

Sorrry folks ......must have been 1/2 asleep ......what I meant to say is: I have a 198 crank and 170 rods w/2.2turbo pistons in a 170 block. I just don't know how low I need the the compression ratio has to be.I'm afraid I'm gonna end up with about 8.7 :1 and to get that I'll have to cut the dished pistons
Does any manufacturer carry a an an extra thick head gasket or a shim gasket? The real need I have is to use a head that I have in which I invested about 200 hours worth of porting. I am disabled now and can't port anymore......I also cut the head 60 to run normally aspirated........help! guess I could have em made ...but too expensive. A thick head gasket just might do it. Here I am thinking aloud. You guys have done all this I know.....what do you think?
regards...sarge

BTW ...what is the best way to pull out timing in relation to the boost...I've got a 6al ignition somewhere. Have a good day all.

You can use a MSD BTM unit.

I set full advance (22* for my engine) and do not worry about initial. I have the vac advance hooked up but it retards back to the 22* once boost comes on.

If you're running only 6-8 psi, I would think up to 9.0:1 would be fine.

Every Texan is in the neighborhood .......right?????????
I'm residing in a shop in Midland Texas. but I sleep in the house sometimes. Just a single guy with grown kids(not at home) and a passion for MOpars. Started racing in 1964 but I've never had so much fun until I got serious about messaging these /6's. Best time of 11.28 in a 63Dart ( normally aspriated ) Seymour still would like a head template I'd bet... I think I just got lucky. Sometimes A BUILD just works out like that, IF YOU KNOW WHAT I MEAN.

I have parts to share and lots of time as I am a disabled Vet. (spinal cord injury). I try not to give advice or make judgments as life is too short, but if I can help anyone in anyway just contact me anytime. Heck sometimes I'm in the shop wide awake at 4am. Hope I'm in your area or close as I need help build this turbo. Mostly need to get some parts or know where to start lookin*

I have to compliment this group . I have never heard such knowledgeable answers and replies. Best regards to all and thanks for accepting me into your group.
Now where did I put my glasses??????????????

If you want a BIG bore composite gasket I like the ones from OZ Permaseal Brand.
Or you can get copper.
What are you looking for?

Now you have my and Mark's attention. Tell us more about the 11.28 car. What did it weigh? What kind of fuel etc. Sounds like a Cameron Tilley level effort. As far as I know the only guy who could pull this off would be David Taylor, are you him? Good luck with your new project.

By the way 11.33 is only in my dreams, I have run in the low fifties but no better. We went down to St. Louis two weeks ago to try for one of those big numbers, instead we got a track that really needed to be scraped off, a 20MPH headwind and an 11.89. There is always next year!

Well the low 11....... 63 Dart is history. My son is disinterested now with a family and all. So I must carry on.....been a long time since I communicated with the forum. Everyone is light years ahead of me now..LOL* I think the magic in the old Dart was in the head so I'm rebuilding it back to exactly what it was. afraid to change a thing. I hope it works with the new turbo set up. BTW I've always been all motor so this is a little intimidating.
There was not much special about the old dart lots of compression JE special pistions.......a lot of porting and welding on the head. solved the oil pump problem by hanging a 440 pump off the front and belt driving it......no fuel pump lobe etc. worked on enough carburetors to start a new business  I was running VP C-12 fuel sometimes and C-14 at others.
The car was down to about 1,700 lbs or so......heck I can't remember the exact #. It was a lot of trouble and very touchy all the time. but when it ran well .........it was was worth every hour.
Don't know how you knew my name but it's me, back for more fun and pain...LOL* I have a great friend working with me now......we have been researching and playing with these 20 yrs now. running out of parts and stuff to cut up.
Thanks for your vote of confidence and if I ask stupid questions it's because I really don't know the answers........Like the head gasket.....I would like a thick graphite gasket to lower the comp ratio any thoughts??????? any body else done this?

David Taylor AKA maxracer

not incognito anymore
