Post subject: Clay City - Quick update
PostPosted: Sun Jul 21, 2002 1:29 pm
Just wanted to post a quick update. I counted 23 cars for 1st round practice. Beautiful sunny weather with temps around 100 and about 90+ humidity. Brett showed up with Mark Goodmans car and was running 10.80's. Mike Jefferies was there also running high 10.80's. Charles Myers had some handling problems but seem to have them fixed late Sat. The fast four consisted of Cox car, Goodman car, Jefferies and Myers. Will Burns had an oil pump problem I believe and Leighton Drake had transmission problems. We left Saturday night to tow back so I am not sure who won regular race or Fast four. I will zip up the pictures I took and email them to Doug so that when he gets home he can post them for you guys. Both Cox car and Drake car won Top Ten best appearing race car. Ron Hamby went out in the second round of /6 race but was still in regular race in the very late rounds. More posted later.

I enjoyed getting to meet some of the folks from the boards and look forward to seeing everyone again.

Ron Hamby whacked me first round. I got through one round sunday. When I left several slants were still in it. I know Brunner(half a hemi) was because he beat me second round. Ron Parker was still in it also.

Dale Rose beat John Cox in Saturday's Slant race. John had Dale covered on the tree, but broke out by .009 while Dale only broke out by .007. Final car count was 24, and only 3 cars that were driven in.

The Fast Four was our first all 10 second field. It was Charles Meyer and his Arrow, John Cox and his '66 Dart, Mike Jeffrey and the "Buzzin' Half Duzzin'", and Brent Laney in Mark Goodman's 5-speed '62 Lancer. Charles beat Mike in the Final, 10:40 to 10:67. Doug thinks this was the first side by side 10 second run in a Fast Four.

I redlighted twice to give Possum Boy the win in our match race. My car was faster in all three rounds, but the red bulbs did me in. Our final pass was side by side 15:40's. Mine went 15:408 to Ron's 15:409. The money was donated to Bobby Rogers as promised, and he split it between the winner and runner-up of the Slant Race. A rematch is scheduled for St. Louis. Later! Dennis

Hey Folks,

The racing and spectacle was amazing! I can't remember having such good pizza... at least in the last week.

I really enjoyed meeting some more excellent and cool Slant racers - Elam, Dennis, Bob Stepp, Seymour Pederson, Barry Harrison, Will Burns, Melinda, etc... I plan to be at the Chattanooga/Brainerd and Richmond races.

Cox bros, Mike Jeffries and Blaine Mueller, Brent Laney/Mark Goodman, and Charles Myers all clicked off some mid-low 10 second passes. Cox boys went 10.43 in qualifying as their best yet - getting better all the time. I believe Mike and Blaine set their low ET at 10.67 as well? Goodman's car was quite impressive with the air-shifted Lenco 5 spd and no nitrous running 10.80s all weekend. If I remember right (heat was melting my brain), Dale Rose in his Arrow won the Slant Six race, and Myers won the fast four on Sunday.

My car chucked an alternator and Elam graciously took me to the parts store to grab a new one. It ran really slow, which I need to figure out, but fairly consistently. Everyone was very supportive too, even though I had some ridiculous race behavior. Barry, thanks again for the battery charge too! Kay H., thanks again for trying to pull my head out of the clouds in the Slant race. I was just not with it...

Last night, Doug Dutra, Charlie and Peg Schmidt, and I had a large dinner with some dense conversation as well.

Great times and see you all again soon,

Lou

Good overview guys, that was a great event, great turn-out, lots of great racing. It was hot. (in more ways than one)

Right now I'm still on the road so it will be a few days before I'm home, more later.
