In an effort to try and breathe some life into the forum and interest in Slant 6 drag racing as a whole...

I went through some of the SSRN archives and pulled out some of the "Racer Profiles" that were featured way back when.

I had intended to update the form and send it out to people in order to add to the collection... You can guess how far that has gotten...

Hopefully this will garner some interest. Everyone feel free to take this format and post your own schtuff. This is similar to the Engine Build thread and may duplicate some things, but some of them expand the story a little. Keep in mind, these profiles were published many years ago, so some things may have changed.

I'll start off with the winner of the first official Slant 6 race -

Gary Bruner's 64 Plymouth Valiant "The Desperado"!!

GARY BRUNER'S 64 VALIANT-THE DESPARADO

You could say Gary Bruner is one of the more experienced Slant 6 racers. Believe it or not, he has been drag racing the same red 64 Valiant since 1972! For many years he ran in IHRA stock eliminator running a 170 motor with both 4 speed and automatic drive trains. When the first modern day Slant 6 race was held down at Bristol in 1997 Gary was the winner.

Since then Gary's had a bit of a dry spell. He doesn't get to too many races due to other responsibilities, and when he does, Gary seems to have more than his share of bad luck. For three years in a row he was never able to line up for the Slant 6 race at Clay City even though he had his car there.

Although a bit heavier that most cars, Gary builds a stout motor and his best times of 12.80 and 104MPH on the Bristol quarter mile are impressive. On the eighth mile where Gary is more at home his best times are 7.86 and 86MPH.

Gary's wife Barbara and daughters Courtney and Allison almost always accompany him to the races. When he isn't working on his own car, Gary can usually be found helping other Slant Racers with theirs. When he has time, Gary builds engines and does headwork for other Slant 6 racers.

Some day Gary would like to build a lighter car and go head to head with the big boys.

Here is the photo to accompany that first race report.

I have the color originals back in KY. Hopefully someday I will get around to scanning those as well...

Both Desperado and the Cox Brothers 66 Dart were red.

Rob I like the idea for sure. It might be nice to have a "Racer's Profile" thread of it's own so it don't get lost in another thread.

Nice job Rob.
Good to re-read about Gary and his accomplishments.
Should be no shortage of interesting slant racers.
