Does anyone know who set this record? Who are "The Drakes"?

At Mokan two years ago, my wife was happy to find a vintage-ish "KENDALL MOTOR OIL" sign that had "The Drakes" on the lower half. We are trying to figure out who or where "The Drakes" came from, and what their back story is. The sign is hanging in our garage.

Now I feel old.

One of the hottest Slant 6 cars ever. A few us still around watched this car go from 11s to high 9s in a few years in the early-mid 2000s. Leighton Drake died in late 2019 and the car has been sitting for about 10 yrs. Tom and Leighton (and Judy) were a team to behold. Sniff... I'll try to round up more pics and post them. There used to be quite a few youtube videos, but I am not seeing them now.

Lou

OK. Yes! His family had a huge auction this past year, with lots of slant six stuff, right?
But not from around Western MO, Eastern KS?

The great horsepower wars! Cox brothers went 9.90's as did Charles Meyer. I think Dale Rose went 10:0's.

Mike went 10:05 at Kearney once. It ate something and that was about the end of Mike spraying. He did get it to run consistent 10:50's after that.

Will probably hold the title forever at 9:09. :D

I have the stuff to do one more good nitrous motor, but I just don't have the heart for it.

Right now.

Drakes are from Matthews, NC (Charlotte burb). Simca is likely still there, and not sure if it can be sold yet.

Get to read this stuff.
Lots of memories, some happy, some sad.

Lou, I thought the Simca was a part of the auction?

I cannot really say much more except that the Simca is still there, to my knowledge.
