I have been researching these gauges over the last few days and find there are as many opinions as people. The last thing I just watched was a video of a guy that builds race engines. He did a back to back test on a Toyota inline six engine using a $1000 Sunnen dial bore gauge on the rod bearings and then testing the same engine with good old platigauge. Guess what! The plasti-gauge was within .0002-.0003 of the $1000 Sunnen tool. That is plenty close enough for me. So maybe I will just keep doing what I have been doing and skip the dial bore gauge all together. Plasigage is ok for a last resort, but it can only give you the clearance at the exact spot on the journal you use it. It cannot tell you if the clearance it tapered or out of round, both of which are important if you are going to the trouble to check your clearance to start with. I'd still consider a dial bore gage if I were you, especially since your builds are race oriented. So even a cheap dial bore gage can show you those problems, where plastigage can't. |
