Just wanted to run this by everybody, even though I think I know the answer. After breaking 4 flexplates now, and switching out 2 different torque converters, etc, in my '64 A100 van, I pulled the cast iron adapter plate off the back of my 225, hoping to find a clue to a misalignment problem and found that there weren't any dowel pins between the block and the plate. Shouldn't there be dowel pins? it looks like there are 2 holes (1/2") that they should be in. The 2 dowel pins between the plate and the transmission are present & in great shape. Is this the answer to the mystery behind my pile of broken flexplates??

ALSO: My buddy was talking with an old transmission guy about all my broken flexplate woes the other day, and this guy says that back in the day, they used to cut the plates into the holes for the torque converter bolts to help reduce stress on the plate to help keep them from cracking. Anyone ever hear of this?

Tom

I would try replacing the dowels first. I think that will solve your problem. 8)

I would add the dowel pins and "dial-in" the assembly.
(Check it for run-out)

Every time I check for run-out... I end-up using off-set dowel pins to get everthing back on centerline.

I have used "cut" flexplates for years, usually when I have a harmonic vibration problem related to engine RPMs.
