Overdrive because you can cruise at higher speed and get better mileage.

My sweptline didn't economize on cast iron. Its essentially the same design as my '47 1/2 ton truck that has a flat head six. The iron bell housing is integral to the cross member, the bell housing sits on a cradle of sorts. Iron must have been cheap in those years.

I bet it was just due to not needing to update designs for whatever reason.. Most of the utiline bed parts are swappaple from the 30's to the 80's !!

I think it's the same logic that allows a Rear Brake Drum from a 87 Caravan to also fit the Front Brake Drum for a 63 Dart.. with 9 X 2 1/2 Brakes.
