I have a lead on a 7.25 sure-grip - need to know if my open-diff axles will work... of if I need sure-grip axles.

7 1/4 SPB axles will interchange open or SG. LBP axles are the same spline, but will not fit the SPB housing. SG unit will interchange with the open carrier, LBP or Sbp.

So...
If I have a SBP, I can size-up the axles to LBP.
But if I had a LBP, I couldn't size-down axles to SBP.

Sound about right?

Large bolt pattern axles have larger wheel bearings and the distance from the bearing to the wheel flange is greater. The housing was made with different ends to take the bigger bearing and also narrower to accommodate the longer axle stick-out. So...the axles stay with the housing, but the differential carrier and gears can move from one housing to another as the splines are the same.

I'll add, that I'm still on the hunt for a 7.25 sure-grip or 8.25 complete differential assembly. Nothing is coming up in my world (Rhode Island), willing to travel for the diff assembly and ship a sure-grip. If you know of anything, kindly think of me.

I have a mostly complete 8.25 from and FJM Body.
It's In IRWIN PA.
Rusty and probably with out Drums. Unknown Ratio, with open center diff.

Are you locked into a Mopar year? Some 8 inch Ford rears are a viable option, and lots of parts available.

Charrlie, not as much brand as it is years for me. I'd like to keep it Mopar.

But, perhaps I'd be willing to swap until the perfect setup came along :) What Ford diffs will slide into place - and what's a good price expectation? Am I asking too much here?? I truly never gave it much thought - perhaps I'm being shortsighted.

There are several 8 inch Ford rears that will work. I'm doing one for myself. The one I have is from a 75-77 Maverick/Comet. Spring perch is the same as "A" body. Wheel mounting surface is 56.375 as compared to the "A body of 55.6 , The ford rear must be from a V-8 (5 on 4.5 bolt pattern) non v-8 rear is 4 lug. This rear is a "drop out like the 8 3/4. there is a tag on one bolt, that will totally identify the rear, including vehicle. If I remember right, a rear from a 70 Comet, and 64-65 Falcon are the same. 74-77 Mustang II is a little wider, at 56.875, and 64-66 Mustang is 57.375 Not sure on the spring perch measurement on those. There might be others. They are probably as hard to find as a "A" body 8 3/4, but if found, a lot less money. There are a lot of parts available. Ford guys remove them and install 9 inch rears. I payed $100 in the salvage yard tor mine. Am installing a 4:30 mini spool in it. Drive shaft will need adapting, but other then that, I don't see any issues. I even think the correct E brake cables for the car, can be installed in the Ford rear and hook up.
