What Years was the charmed snake 3 speed floor shifter shifter available on the '60-'62 Valiants and Lancers?

That would be 1960 and 1961. I have a 60 V200 with that set up.

Last question I Promise!

For cars with the Floor Shift in 60 and 61 - did they all have the light duty non synchronized 1st gear like my 3 on the tree car does?

Thanks!

Greg

They are the A903/ non synchro first gear.
On a tangent....When I bought my '60 Valiant about 10 years ago I got a spare A903 with it. Supposedly it was beefed up somehow.....when I get some time I will try and find out what was done to it if anything...maybe it was just a rebuilt unit with some marketing optimism. I plan to run the A903 behind a hyper pak 170.

I believe the transmissions were also tilted with the engines.

I had a 903 in the '64 dart and one in my '62. I think they are not tilted.

My 65 Valiant was that 3 speed.
It was a bitch to race anyone from a roll, it was a dog.
Once you got rolling it would scream.

Got a 65 Barracuda with the 4 speed and never looked back.
SOooooooo much better with that syncro and extra gear.

Strickly my opinion. I think you will be unhappy with the 903, behind a hyperpak 170. When you slow down for a light, and the light goes green, you will not have enough torque to accelerate in 2nd gear, and shifting down to 1st while still rolling, sucks. Personally I would use the later 3sp (can't remember the number, A-230?) or 4 spd, with the syncro 1st.

I agree with Charrlie on this one.

The lightness and wispiness of that box is not offset by the "it sucks factor" with that non synchro'd 1st gear.

If you would somehow be interested in a 3 speed with a synchronized 1st gear, let me know as I have one complete with a floor shifter that I will let go - It was from an F body car.

PM Me if you like.

Really appreciate hyper_pak and Charlies opinions/experiences. Greg I will think about it and get with you soon. I guess if I went with the A230 I would need to alter the floor to fit the A230 shifter...I'm not opposed to doing that. I think the A230 would be an awesome upgrade and maybe a 4 speed later on. I would miss the look of the stock '60 snake shifter though.

When I bought my ‘61 Lancer, the previous owner had put 65 Dart 3 speed in it because the aluminum tail shaft housing had corroded so badly the output seal lost its seat.
Anyway the newer transmission housing mounts more upright and the 2-3 shift lever seems that it would’ve hit the floor near the accelerator pedal mount area.
He hammered the floor up into the passenger compartment to give it clearance. He also eliminated the torque shaft and used a modified shift rod. It all worked fine but I only drove it 1/4 mile with that set up.
4 speed in it now. I’m planning on making a shifter handle that more closely resembles the snake charmer handle. I’m not sure that the skinny diameter of that handle will work on an a833 though.
I will probably use a bigger diameter and no need for chrome as those early shifters seem to have been painted argent silver.
