Hey there. We finished the bodywork on our 64 170 Valiant. Now it’s running at 550rpm at idle with 12“BTD. New points and breaker, also new sparkplugs. Runs quiet good with it’s stock Engine. But.. there is always a but.. . When shifting from idle to D it is jumping forward and from idle to R it‘s the same and a little harder. I have adjusted the linkage like it should. <- from carshop manual put of the sixties. I even tried by playing around with timing and so. Sometimes it is ok, but next time it will be hard. No matter if it’s cold or hot. Any ideas would be very welcome. |

Sounds like a converter stall speed issue... But 550 RPM is nice and slow..should not be any issues there. Have you verified the tach RPM is correct - not set to a v8 etc? |

12° BTDC is much too much initial timing advance; a '64 170 should be set at 5° BTDC (with the vacuum hose removed from the distributor and plugged). When you set the timing correctly, you will have to re-adjust your idle speed and mixture. Do that, and see to the transmission's band adjustments (and change the fluid and filter, if it's been awhile). |

Thanks for your ideas. I the rpm with a digital testing device. It is only changeable between 2stroke and 4stroke. As i checked the transmission fluid level today, i noticed that nearly 1 pint is missing. About the timing.. I tried to get the timing a little more to BTD, but then it Stalls and dies. Sure a readjusting of mixture and idle will help. I‘m going to try and tell you guys what’s happening. |

does the tachometer connect to the spark plug wire, or to the Ign primary (coil/distributor) ? If to a plug (not the heavy wire from the coil to distributor cap) wire the rpm is probably reading correctly (4 cycle). If it connects to the ign primary, it is most likely reading incorrectly. |

Are the ball joints loose / have play in them. |
