1989 (when i purchased my 1981 van used)-2016: apart from a brief dipstick leak around time of purchase which was resolved, no issues. 2016: Changed transmission fluid (ATF+4) and filter. Installed re-usable gasket 2464324AC with special bolts 6036402AA. Worked slowly and carefully, tightening bolts to spec. Over the past several years i’ve noticed leaking transmission fluid from around the gasket/pan edge, especially at the front passenger corner: Attachment: Some bolts were loose. Retightened to spec. Do they need thread locker or something? Leak persists. It’s become much more severe than in the photo: the cardboard was discolored over a very wide area directly under the transmission pan, with a red tint, not brown like motor oil. Transmission works fine unless the fluid gets too low. Prior to 2016 i never had to add transmission fluid; now i occasionally must. What am i missing? What do i need to check/do? ~ Thanks ~ |

The updated trans pan is much sturdier than the earlier pans, and good and flat along the gasket rail (older pans are often distorted by overtorqued bolts together with the old squishy gaskets). Plus it has provisions for a doughnut magnet to catch and sequester metal shavings. |
