63 Valiant: have had an oil drip for a while, and today I finally looked under the car to see what is going on.. This is what I found... I assumed the trans was leaking (3 spd) but the leak, as you can see is coming out from that failed boot This being my first Mopar product, I'm not familiar with this trans/driveshaft setup... what is this part? part of the trans? driveshaft? Can I fix it laying on my back lol? thanks for any help,, tips

They make those boots, but they are hard to replace and you might damage the oddball ball-and-trunion joint.

In the past, I was able to take a plastic garbage bag and carefully wrap it around and secure it with zip ties and it worked for 20-30k miles before I switched to a different U-joint setup. Yes, not ideal, but would work for a while.

Someone here might have parts or another solution. You can replace the B&T setup with a truck-style slip yoke and special flange that Spicer makes (or made at one point).

There is nothing fundamentally the matter with the ball-and-trunnion front U-joint Chrysler used through '65, but at this late date a torn boot is the least of your worries; the joint likely has substantial wear, and rebuilding it is costly. The conversion to the more conventional cross-and-roller type joint is a wise use of repair dollars. The how-to is here.

So am I to assume the oil leak is coming from the trans? I ask because I do want to actually drive this car in a week or two... It has not been driven for I don't know how many years. I've never driven it, never moved it out of my garage. wouldn't want to ruin the trans. Second: If I can locate a driveshaft shop (I'm out in the boonies), Can I get them to make me up a complete new unit, front to back, if I give them the measurements and necessary parts, assuming I can find them?

No, the leak is from the B&T joint "pot" on the front of the driveshaft. You will not hurt the trans, and short driving as is will not hurt the joint.

Yes, they can make a new driveshaft, front to back. Best to take the old driveshaft to them, or answer their questions carefully over the phone (and measure the old driveshaft carefully).
