I've got a strange problem with my auto transmission. (63 Valiant, 225) When I go around sharp bends and then head up steep hills, it just doesn't want to down shift. Seems fine as long as there are no sharp bends before a hill. Also, occasionally, doesn't want to shift into third on straightaways after a sharp bend, an when it finally dose, it dose it slowly. A friend suggested that I change the old coffee can looking trans filter (out-board) down near the exhaust pipe. He thought that maybe dirt was sloshing around on bends. Fluid looks clean, and level is good. Any suggestions?

Check the "kick-down" linkage for proper adjustment first. After that, change the filter. If you can not find the factory canister filter replacement, remove it and use a 64-65 type "in pan" filter instead. You may find that the current in pan filter screen may have come loose and allows the unit to suck air on the curves & hills.

If all that stuff checks-out fine, the next move would be to swap-out or rebuild the valve body.
