Post subject:  It got hot in here

I was given a Valiant 200, 225 engine, running fine. On the drive home, it overheated REAL bad. So bad, a deep knock was coming from the crankcase. (We stupidly forgot to check the radiator... car had sat for years.) Anyway, nursed it home. Removed the engine, thinking a spun bearing, maybe, or ???

Found: two bent pushrods. Crank bearings look great. Crank surfaces are shiny chrome appearing, no evidence of burning. Engine turns over easily by hand, is real smooth.

The whole thing was rebuilt supposedly back when the old lady got it. (Don't know when that was.)

So, wondering, if everything turns fine, maybe just replace pushrods, gaskets, seals, etc. and things will be okay? Anyone recommend a valve job while the head is off? I'm no car mechanic, but trust the folks here. Thanks for any advice.

By the way, the overheating had the temp guage pegged on HOT... and the oil pressure was like, not much. And the center crankshaft counter balance gizmo has what looks like a scored area where it may have been rubbing something... but can't see anything that looks messed up inside other than the bent pushrods.

Long post, but thanks for your time and input. Will be happy to provid more info if anyone asks.

If there is no ring ridge at the top of the bores and the pistons are still round, (measure them)then just do a simple overhaul. (ring, bearings & gaskets)
You could get away with reusing the main bearings if they plasti guage OK.
New rings and con rod bearings are a must in my mind. (rings can loose tension when overheated)

Some good cylinder head work is where you should spend the time and money, that is if you plan to use some performance goodies later.
