What this fella said . ![]() He likes to know the "timing" of the fuel pump lobe. He is planning to use fuel pump cycle as source of cam position sensor in to the engine position. 2 full circulars or 720 degrees. Depending of the ECU limitations it is important to locate the cam sensor "pulse" either before or after TDC and not BDC but also not in TDC. If the fuel pump lobe is either BDC or TDC located the usage of it is difficult or not possible for such application. ... |

Other random fyi’s…. The diyautotune sensor is active low… need to change tunerstudio option to falling edge. There’s plenty of oil slinging around in that area. Don’t forget to put sealer around the sensor base before bolting it to the plate. Thought I could get away with it…. Oops. |

This was my way to do a cam sensor: ![]() The sensor is mounted to the cover by welding a nut with correct type of threads. It is Cherry hall-type sensor. ![]() The spot sensor is reading is welded to the steel timing gear. DO NOT WELD CAST IRON WHEEL. I have had the sensor in a modified distributor. Because cam gear worn problems I used the distributor hole for an additional cam gear oiler. It can be seen here: ![]() The sprayer uses VW TDI engine piston oiler. ![]() I will share the same oil line for this which I have used for a turbocharger. |

Tested. It was ok. As this way is the most accurate (and direct) method to get a cam signal this gives possibility to check a cam timing and a chain stretch too. ![]() The cam sensor seen has couple of nuts on it. Those will keep the distance to timing chain wheel in order when installing that sensor to the timing cover. For a reason or another the Romac damper belt groove was not aligned to the water pump. The manufacturer didn't have a good explanation. Probably Romac assembly line have mixed parts on it? However I got the problem fixed with an additional 3 mm (0.12") spacer I made myself. ![]() As well there was need for some honing of the Romac damper to get it fit to '65 170 crank. A little bit too much hassle with just a damper I will say. |
