Post subject:  Windshield Wiper Question

I have a 1973 Scamp with a three-speed wiper motor. They were working fine until I recently did some work that required me to remove and reinstall the instrument cluster several times to fix some issues with the speedometer, cluster lights, and fuel gauge. I have all those issues handled now, but now the wipers won't work. The washer works, so the switch is grounded, but no wipers. I was planning to remove the switch and test it with a multi tester as the manual suggests, but I did this before the last cluster install and it seemed to work fine then. I know there is a circuit breaker in this system - is this attached to the switch itself? If it got tripped do I need a new switch? Any help on troubleshooting would be appreciated. Thanks.

IIRC the washer will work even if the switch isn't grounded.

After not working for two weeks, including on the one day it has rained here in the last several months, my wipers worked yesterday. I'm glad I checked before taking out the instrument cluster again. So it must have been a grounding problem, loose wire, etc.

The saga continues...last night it was raining and when I went to turn the wipers on they didn't work. After driving a bit they came on on the high speed setting, but the switch was in the "Off" position. When I turned the switch to low speed the wipers stopped without returning to the low position. Then after a while the wipers worked normally in off, low, medium, high. By the time got home they had stopped again. At least after twisting the switch for awhile I got them to return to the low position. What PITA! So, does it make sense to conclude I need a new switch? Doesn't seem like a grounding issue if they are running in the off position.

Signs point to needing a new switch.

You need to make absolutely certain that the dash cluster, and most importantly, the wiper switch is securely grounded. Otherwise, you will have bizarre things happen like what you are experiencing.
(been there-broke that).

Is there any way to check the switch grounding without removing the cluster? Perhaps a continuity check with the switch post? (the part the knob slides on to...)

Don't let coincidence be your nemesis, sounds like an inconsistent ground
at the wiper motor strap, put a screwdriver across a mounting stud to the
motor body. If she sparks & starts, the ground strap & nut etc needs to be
cleaned, or the attachment to the motor is compromised.
Otherwise, try to check for terminal push-out from behind the dash.
