If you're driving at night, there is no longer any current-production sealed beam headlamp that can be recommended as even a halfway decent option. :-(

The GE Night Hawk sealed beams used to be the only ones worth buying. GE closed down their sealed beam factory in 2017 or '18; now the lamps are sourced in China and they are just godawful. Tough to call the mess that comes out of them a "beam pattern", it's an ugly, almost random spray of light that may meet the minimum legal requirements, but if so, that's all it barely does. Dim, dull orange-y light colour like an old pre-halogen sealed beam. Very unpleasant to drive with at night, and they're very easily breakable, too.

Yuck!

So in the 5x7 (6054) size Hella ECE conversions are the best option?

Thanks for the heads up, Dan. Are we surprised?

Lou

I guess it's to be expected, what with the biggest share of the market looking for price point rather than good quality.
(heavy sigh) :(

The Hella ECE lamp in the large rectangular size has never been a good pick. Very inefficient on low beam (inadequate seeing distance) and too much vertical separation between low and high beam (aim the lows well and the highs are up in the trees; pull the highs down to straight ahead and the lows are on the front bumper). The SAE/DOT version of the Hella lamp is a better bet, and there are other good options (and many bad ones) in the large rectangular size. Similar situation for the large (7-inch) and small (5¾") rounds and the small (6½ × 4) rectangulars, though the best-pick and best-avoided lists differ per size.

Interesting. So I will be able to compare the old Cibie 6054s to the Hella 6054s. My Ford van will be getting Cibies and my Ramcharger will be getting Hellas.
