I understand that a reluctor/magnetic pickup can be used to trigger a typical 1970's-1980's GM 4 pin HEI module. I also know that an older distributor with points can be used to trigger a 1980's-1990's grey Ford TFI module. I read the excellent thread here about using the 1996-2000 GM heat sink, coil, and coil bracket but it noted that the 1996-2000 HEI module uses a 0-5 volt square wave trigger and it won't work with the the Mopar distributor (reluctor/magnetic pickup).

I have found a schematic that shows how points can be used to trigger the 4-pin GM HEI module with the use of a resistor.

My question is this: Can a points type distributor somehow be used to trigger a newer 1996-2000 GM weatherproof connector 4-pin module?

Please see the photos below.

Thank you in advance, Chris.

Sure, have the points switch the 5V.

Joshie 225, Then just hook up the newer HEI like the photo of the old one with the points and resistor?

If what you're saying is true about the newer module being triggered by a 5V square wave you'll need to come up with the 5V externally and feed it to the module. 12V as shown will likely kill the module. This will be far easier if the module is triggered on the rising edge as the points will pull the signal low and it will go high when the points open. If this doesn't make sense then you'll need to do some study. Why try to make the newer module work anyhow when the older style is known to work?

Why would we use points at all? Just wondering?

I am thinking about an application for an older motor that does not have an upgrade to a magnetic pickup to fire the HEI. I know that Pertronix may be an option, but I like the idea of low-buck parts from the wreckers.
