Have you checked the reluctuor/pickup gap in the distributor? Where did you get the distributor? Remanufactured distributors available at parts stores these days are highly suspect due to poor remanufacturing protocols. Does the distributor shaft have side-to-side play? Don't know why you would object to spending a small amount of money fixing your truck instead of spending more money to get a different vehicle.

Well into it for about $1000 now lol Anyway new cap and rotor (found a small defect in old one 300 miles on it but it was a cheap one. Put it back at TDC this morn, reset the dizz, and with dizz fully seated and it started. Next up new timing chain set. I swear the chain is slipping. How else could the dizz move out of time??

2 ideas. One is the # or times you've had things in and out, maybe didn't tighten something as much as you thought?
And 2. I had this happen to me once. 79 d150 with the slant.
I left the house, got a 1/2 a mile away and had a backfire. Crank and crank and crank, no fire. I coasted into a farm field entrance just to get out of the road. Something led me to pull the distributor on the spot, the dist gear was chewed up. I took another car to the parts store, and got a gear. Put it in, fired once, then backfired, then crank with no response.
Chewed up another gear. When I pulled the distributor the 2nd time the drive gear on the cam was in a position where I could see the cause. All the teeth on one side of the cam gear were sheared. With my brother's help we got the truck home with moms car and a chain. I found another slant and swapped engines. I wish I would have just put a cam in that original engine as the replacement ended up being a bad oil burner. Which led me to find and build up a (non slant) engine for that truck.
