Which battery cable should I disconnect first - positive or negative cable, and why?

I have a 61 Valiant.

Thanks

Either will work but I was told years ago negative first. And reconnected last

Disconnect the negative lead first. If the wrench accidently hits something (fender, radiator yoke, bracket, etc) it won't matter because everything is essentially ground. Then, with the negative post clear, it won't matter if the wrench hits something (fender, radiator yoke, bracket, etc) as you remove the positive cable from the battery.
It is just a basic safety precaution to reduce the chance of shorting the battery during an 'oops' moment.
Electrically, it doesn't matter which cable is removed first.
jus sayin....
