The December issue of Mopar Action page 46 lower left corner is a photo of the factory (prototype) 1976 turbocharged slant six that was installed in a pickup truck in California and driven by Tom Hoover to Detroit. Too bad it never made it into production. Yes Dan, we know there is no such thing.Never was.

I saw that also. Too bad it never made it into production but it help to spawn the neat 2.2 and 2.5 turbos that came just a little later down the road.

Back in 1978, I called Larry Shepard, about that turbo setup. He reffered me to Tom, for info about it. Tom told me that they discontinued the project because they couldn't get the engine to live, and wouldn't give me any info about the setup. The next year I was running my turbo 170.

Yeah, I saw that too - pretty cool! Wish I could get one of those factory exh mans. I bet it was that part that was failing, though, not the bottom end.

I met Bob Tarozzi a couple of times at the Spring Fling Speed Festival in 07 and 08. Very cool dude.

Hard to make out the lettering but looks like by the number of letters it may be garrett ?

Wasn't there someone here on the board who was offering custom built turbo manifolds a few years back? Cutting and re-welding the stock manifold with a turbo mounting flange?

Maybe we can get Doc to alter his Dutra Dual casting a touch... shouldn't take more than a Saturday morning or so...

(Seriously though, I'd bet they would sell!)

Years ago, Ak Miller outfitted a series of the \6 powered Dodge trunks with draw thru tubro systems for the California DOT. They used a custom cast exhaust manifold and TO4 turbos. I talked to him about the availability of those exhaust manifolds. He was not interested in producing any new ones, but he did give me some suggestions on turbo sizing.

From what I could tell by the small picture in Mopar Action, the configuration of that particular turbo mount used a piece of (nominal) 2.5"-diameter, short-radius, U-Bend tubing to mount the turbo. It did not mount on the exhaust manifold in the picture I saw.

There is a member on FABO whose screen name is "PISHTA" who fabricated a mounting system for his own car that is similar to the one in the Mopar Action photo, but has significant differences.

1. His is a blow-thru, not a draw-thru system, and

2. The U-Bend runs forward (toward the radiator,) not toward the firewall, like the one in the photo of the MOPAR prototype does,

Slant six exhaust manifolds are prone to cracking, and welding on them, such as you'd almost HAVE to do, to attach a turbo mount to the exhaust outlet to the original manifold, should be avoided so as not to encourage said cracks.

PISHTA's system made it possible to attach the turbo to the stock manifold outlet to a turbo scroll (exhaust inlet) without any welding on the casting, itself; just attaching (welding)a bolt-on flange onto the U-Bend.

The other end of the U-Bend has a turbocharger mounting flange welded to it, providing a horizontal mating surface to bolt the turbo flange to.

I thought this was a really good idea, and one that could be easily implemented by anybody who can weld at all. (I can't.)

You'd need to move the battery to the trunk to make room for the turbo, but that's not a bad idea, anyway,...

Too bad PISHTA doesn't sell these; I'd buy one!

If anyone wants a stock manifold converted for a turbo I can do it

I cut the original mani before the heat riser, weld on the T3 or T4 mani. This makes it easy to use a straight 2.5" sched 40 iron pipe with both ends flanged to make the manifold 2 pieces and for a waste gate housing. It mounts the turbo just above my steering box (manual)

You could also use a J pipe instead of a straight piece to get the turbo anywhere you want in the engine bay, without spending hella dough and time on a tubular mani.
